(Healthy Eyes)
Mathiơ 6:22-23a
“Con mắt là đèn của thân thể. Nếu mắt ngươi sáng sủa thì cả thân thể ngươi sẽ được sáng láng; nhưng nếu mắt ngươi xấu, thì cả thân thể sẽ tối tăm…”
(The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness…)
I. Eyesight
> How is your eyesight? Is it perfect 20/20 vision? (Sự thấy của quí vị có tốt không? Con mắt của bạn có nhìn thấy rõ ràng toàn vẹn không?)
> Can you even see the “profound” meaning beyond the outside appearance? (Không phải chỉ thấy phần bên ngoài mà thôi, quí vị có thấy và hiểu được những điều sâu xa thầm kín không?)
# Samsung comes out with a new and hottest video game gadget called the Virtual Reality (SVR) to see “deeper” dimension of things. It costs 100$ each. (Hãng điện thoại Samsung mới ra một món đồ chơi mới, đó là cái kính “virtual reality” mà khi đeo vào bạn có thể thấy những hình ảnh lạ nữa. Mỗi cái bán đến 100$.)
> What’s about your perspective? Can you discern the correct value of all things? (Còn cái nhìn hay gọi là quan điểm của quí vị thì sao? Có phân biệt được đúng gía trị của mọi thứ không?)
> What standards do you use to determine their values? (Bạn dựa trên những tiêu chuẩn nào để nhận định gía trị của mọi thứ?)
> How do you know that your standards are right and fair? (Làm sao biết tiêu chuẩn bạn đang dùng để định đoán mọi thứ là đúng và công bình?)
> Don’t you know that how your life is; it depends on your eyesight – how you see things and determine their values. (Bạn có biết là cuộc sống của mình sẽ như thế nào, tùy theo cái nhìn của mình và sự định đóan gía trị của mọi vật không?)
> As a part of the Sermons on the mount, Jesus uses eyesight metaphor to illustrate this important point. (Một trong những bài giảng trên núi của Chúa Giê-xu, Ngài dùng sự thấy qua con mắt, như một ẩn dụ để dạy dỗ điều quan trọng này.)
> In fact, the Bible uses many body parts as metaphors to enhance our understanding of morals and ethics. (Trong Kinh Thánh cũng dùng nhiều chi thể của thân như là những ẩn dụ để dạy dổ về luân lý và đạo đức.)
a) For example, the tongue can be a mean to express in words an evil heart that is very difficult to control. (Chẳng hạn như cái lưỡi được dùng để ám chỉ một dụng cụ mà rất khó kiềm hãm được, và cũng bởi nó mà những lời nói xấu xa, độc ác phát xuất ra.)
# James 3:8 said – “But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.” (Trong Giacơ 3:8 có chép – “nhưng cái lưỡi, không ai trị phục được nó; ấy là một vật dữ người ta không thể hãm dẹp được: đầy dẫy những chất độc giết chết.”)
b) The hand is often used to symbolize power in the Bible. (Bàn tay dùng biểu hiệu cho quyền lực.)
# In Exodus 3 at the burning bush, God told Moses that he would stretch out His hand to strike Egypt so that the Israelites would be set free. (Trong sách Xuất Hành đoạn 3 tại bụi gai cháy không tàn, Chúa phán cùng Môise rằng Ngài sẽ dang tay quyền năng ra, để làm hại dân Êdíptô mà giải cứu dân sự Chúa ra khỏi ách nô lệ.)
c) A hard heart signifies a person’s resistance to the will of God, whereas a soft heart represents a person’s submission to the will of God. (Trái tim cứng cỏi biểu thị cho một tấm lòng đi nghịch với ý Chúa, còn một con tim mềm mại thì luôn đầu phục Ngài.)
> Here, Jesus used the eye as a metaphor symbolizing the understanding of the heart and its life pursuit, either for evil or for good. (Còn ở đây thì Chúa dùng con mắt như là cánh cửa giao thông phản chiếu những gì trong tấm lòng của một người muốn đeo đuổi trong cuộc sống, những điều xấu hay tốt.)
# Proverbs 21:4 - describes a man with prideful heart as having haughty eyes – “Haughty eyes and a proud heart—the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.” (Trong Châm ngôn 21:4 diễn tả kẻ kiêu ngạo trong lòng thì có con mắt háo hách sanh ra tội lỗi – “Mắt tự cao, lòng kiêu ngạo, và ngọn đèn của kẻ ác, đều là tội lỗi.”)
# Proverbs 23:26 - the process of seeing is ultimately connected to the origin of the heart – “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways,” (Châm Ngôn 23:26 nói đến sự liên hệ giao thông giữa những ước vọng của tấm lòng và những đường lối con mắt đeo đuổi theo sau – “Hỡi con, hãy dâng lòng con cho cha, và mắt con khá ưng đẹp đường lối của cha.”)
> People will want to see what their hearts desire. (Người ta ai cũng sẽ dễ nhìn thấy những gì bên ngoài họ đang ao ước trong lòng.)
# If the heart is full of jealousy, through a person’s eyes, he will find ways to slander his enemies? (Nếu tấm lòng của một người đầy dẫy sự ghen tức, thì qua con mắt người đó sẽ đi tìm mọi cách “ăn thua đủ,” để làm hại kẻ thù mình.)
# If the heart is full of sexual thirst, through a person’s eyes, he will find many unclean things that can satisfy his heart desires, may be through pornography or having affairs. (Nếu tấm lòng đầy tham vọng của tình dục xấu xa, thì qua con mắt một người sẽ tìm đủ mọi cách để thỏa mãn tư dục, có thể là qua những hình ảnh dâm dục trên mạng lưới Internet hay liên hệ trong những mối tình dục xấu xa với người khác.)
a) The root of unhealthy desires of the heart is a monster called “greed” for many things, such as prestige, power, sexual senses, and the most common is money. (Cội rễ của những ước vọng xấu xa trong lòng của con người chính là lòng tham lam: tham quyền chức, tham dục vọng xấu xa, và nhất là tham tiền.)
> The greedy accumulation of money is seductive, and it can become another god/master in a person's life. (Sự tham lam đeo đuổi tiền bạc là điều có sức mạnh thu hút khủng khiếp, mà dễ làm một người sẵn sàng làm nô lệ cho tiền bạc, đế nó làm chúa của đời mình.)
> Do you see some connections of what goes before and after of what Jesus said about “the eye is the lamp of the body.” (Quí vị có thấy sự liên hệ giữa những câu Kinh Thánh trước và sau đoạn này không?)
> Before verses 22-23, in verses 19-21, Jesus taught about not gathering up treasures on earth: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” and one of earthly treasures is money. (Trước câu 22-23, trong câu 19-21 thì Chúa Giê-xu dạy – “Các ngươi chớ chứa của cải ở dưới đất, là nơi có sâu mối, ten rét làm hư, và kẻ trộm đào ngạch khoét vách mà lấy; nhưng phải chứa của cải ở trên trời, là nơi chẳng có sâu mối, ten rét làm hư, cũng chẳng có kẻ trộm đào ngạch khoét vách mà lấy. Vì chưng của cải ngươi ở đâu, thì lòng ngươi cũng ở đó,” nghĩa là chớ tham lam đeo đuổi những của cải vật chất, có gía trị chóng qua mà thôi, và một trong những của cải ở dưới đất này là tiền bạc.)
> Heavenly treasure here would have been associated with light, and earthly treasure associated with darkness in these verses. (Của báu trên trời biểu hiệu cho sự sáng, còn của cải vật chất mang ý nghĩa của sự tối tăm.)
> A person pursues treasures either in heaven or on earth, determines either he has an inner light or inner darkness. (Đời sống của một người đeo đuổi gì sẽ định tấm lòng bên trong của người đó đang tối hay sáng.)
> After verses 22-23, in verse 24, Jesus mentioned again about “You cannot serve both God and money.” (Sau đó trong câu 24 thì Chúa lại dạy dỗ chớ yêu thích tiền bạc, nhưng phải yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời mình.)
> Therefore, the sayings before and after Matthew 6:22-23 point to one of darkest desires in the heart is the greed for money, that a person can spend all of his life to chase after, and forgets his Creator. (Như vậy câu 22-23 này dạy một trong những tham vọng tối tăm nhất trong lòng mà c/ta phải canh giữ đó là lòng tham của tiền bạc; nó sẽ làm cho một người bỏ hết cả cuộc đời chỉ biết đeo đuổi của cải vật chất đời này làm chúa đời mình mà thôi.)
# Countless people live in this world are chasing after money and know nothing else. (Biết bao nhiêu người sống trên đời này chỉ biết “lo hái tiền,” làm ăn “đầu tắt mặt tối,” để mong được giàu có, sống sung sướng, ăn sang mặc đẹp, nhưng chẳng bao giờ suy nghĩ đến thế giới đời đời.)
> You can witness to them, preach to them, share the words with them, they may knock their heads, but when they return home, they will just continue go after money, because that is the desire of their heart that has not changed. (C/ta có thể làm chứng cho họ, giảng cho họ nghe, họ có thể gật đầu đồng ý, nhưng khi trở về nhà, cuộc sống của họ sẽ vẫn cứ đeo đuổi theo tiền bạc vì đó là tham vọng trong tấm lòng của họ có mà chưa được thay đổi.)
b) In the opposite of an unhealthy heart is a healthy heart, that through the eyes, a person can see the beauty of God’s grace and the brightness of His generosity. (Ngược lại với tấm lòng xấu là một tấm lòng sáng láng, có thế thấy được ân sủng lạ lùng của Chúa và lòng rộng lượng yêu thương của Ngài.)
> His eyes can see how to live a life that can be a blessing to others. (Qua con mắt của người đó sẽ thấy được những cơ hội chúc phước những người khác vì biết Chúa luôn chúc phước mình.)
> With a heart full of light, a person can experience God’s loving kindness, Who always forgive his sins when he sincerely confesses them, that he can learn to forgive all who has done wrong to him. (Với tấm lòng biết ơn Chúa luôn tha tội cho mình, một người qua con mắt thấy được những cơ hội để mình cũng sẵn sàng tha thứ mọi người khác đã xúc phạm đến mình.)
> With a heart full of the fear of God, a person will desire to keep God’s commandments throughout his daily life. (Với tấm lòng kính sợ Chúa, một người sẽ cẩn thận giữ các điều răn của Chúa và chăm chỉ làm công việc của Ngài một cách ưu tiên và sốt sắng hết lòng.)
> So, an unhealthy eye is a worldly eye; it only chases after the things of this world that are not eternal and can ruin his life; but a healthy eye can truly see the beauty and precious things of God and go after those valuable things. (Như vậy con mắt xấu đây ám chỉ con mắt thuộc của thế gian, chỉ tham lam đeo đuổi những điều tạm bợ ở trần gian này mà sẽ làm hư hỏng một đời người; nhưng con mắt sáng sủa thì sẽ thấy và tìm kiếm những điều thánh sạch thuộc của Chúa và có gía trị trường tồn.)
II. The Lamp of Our Living
> Why did Jesus say: “the eye is the lamp of the body?” What is the purpose of a Lamp? (Tại sao Chúa Giê-xu lại nói: “Con mắt là đèn của thân thể?” Mục đích của cái đèn là để làm gì?)
> The purpose of a lamp has not changed over times; its purpose is to provide light that dispels the darkness. (Mục đích của cái đèn không thay đổi qua nhiều thời đại, đèn luôn được dùng để chiếu ánh sáng, đẩn lùi bóng tối đi.)
> A lamp could be used as a source of light to illuminate a room or to provide enough light to illuminate a path at night. (Mục đích của đèn là để tỏa ánh sáng trong một căn phòng để c/ta thấy được mọi thứ, hay chiếu sáng lối đi của c/ta trong ban đêm.)
> The purpose of the lamp is to shine light which guides the body where to go and to do what the body desires. (Đèn chiếu ánh sáng là để dẫn lối cho thân thể c/ta biết đường đi, đến đúng chỗ và làm gì trong bóng tối.)
> And through the eyes as a lamp of the soul which contains all the heart desires, a person pursues life with either healthy or unhealthy things. (Qua con mắt là cái đèn của tâm hồn, nơi chứa đựng mọi ước mơ hay tham vọng mà một người muốn tìm kiếm, đeo đuổi, dù cho là những điều ác hay lành.)
# Jesus said if the heart is dark (no light), through his eyes, his life or body will pursue unhealthy things. (Nếu tấm lòng đầy dẫy những điều ác, thì qua con mắt, thân thể của một người sẽ đeo đuổi những điều ác.)
> If the heart is full of light, his eyes will guide his body to go after the healthy things. (Nếu tấm lòng đầy sự sáng, thì con mắt của người đó sẽ hướng dẫn đời sống của người đeo đuổi tìm kiếm những điều sáng sủa tốt lành.)
> So the “body” here symbols of life pursuit of a person, our living to chase after or to seek things in this world, either unhealthy for the flesh or healthy for God’s kingdom. (Và thân thể đây biểu hiệu cho “lối sống” của một người đeo đuổi những điều tốt hay xấu.)
# Romans 12:1 – teaches about our body, meaning our daily living, and not just a few hours on Sunday, is the true sacrifice to worship God – “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Trong Rôma 12:1 lời Chúa dạy thân thể của con cái Chúa chính là “lối sống” hằng ngày của c/ta, như một của lễ sống và thánh dâng lên Chúa mỗi ngày – “Vậy, hỡi anh em, tôi lấy sự thương xót của Đức Chúa Trời khuyên anh em dâng thân thể mình làm của lễ sống và thánh, đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời, ấy là sự thờ phượng phải lẽ của anh em.”)
III. Keep a Healthy Heart
> To pursue healthy things through the eyes, we need a healthy heart; so our life, our living is not in ruin. (Để tìm kiếm được những điều sáng láng qua con mắt thì tấm lòng của c/ta phải được sáng sủa, để cuộc đời của mình không bị kết thúc trong sự hư mất.)
> How to do that? (Làm sao được đây?)
a) The condition of a heart healthy or unhealthy will depend on what you feed your heart with. (Yếu tố căn bản để có một tấm lòng xấu hay tốt là tùy thuộc vào c/ta đang nuôi nó với những gì.)
# A story of a teacher teaching his students about inside each of us there are a mean and sweet dogs. They are constantly fighting each others; one always guides the body to do good, the other lures to do evil. One student raised hands and asked – “So what dog will win?” The teacher wisely said – A dog will win it depends on how well you will feed it, and not starve it to death. (Câu chuyện của một ông thầy giáo dạy các học sinh của mình là trong mỗi c/ta có 2 con chó đang tranh đấu với nhau; một con hiền luôn muốn hướng dẫn mình làm những điều lành, còn con chó dữ kia thì cứ xuí dục làm nhiều điều ác. Một học sinh dơ tay hỏi – “Như vậy con chó nào sẽ thắng?” Vị thấy gíao khôn ngoan trả lời: “Dễ thôi, con chó nào thắng sẽ tùy theo các em cho nó ăn đầy đủ, chứ không cho nó bị chết đói.”)
# America promotes a lot of ways to keep a physical and healthy body by eating “organics” food, low fat, no carbs, no glutton… (Nước Mỹ này người ta cổ động rất nhiều cách để giữ thân thể khỏe mạnh bằng cách ăn đồ ăn “organics” – không trồng dùng những chất hóa học, ăn những thức ăn ít mỡ, không có nhiều chất bột hay chất glutton.)
> The same principle applies to our spiritual body to keep it having full of light. (Đối với thân thể thuộc linh cũng có cùng một yếu tố giống vậy, c/ta nuôi nó bằng thứ “organics” gì, để giữ cho tấm lòng được đầy dẫy sự sáng.)
# In Philippians 4:8-9 Paul listed the best and heathiest “organics” food for the soul – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Trong Philíp 4:8-9 có ghi chép một món thức ăn tốt nhất cho tâm hồn – “Rốt lại, hỡi anh em, phàm điều chi chân thật, điều chi đáng tôn, điều chi công bình, điều chi thánh sạch, điều chi đáng yêu chuộng, điều chi có tiếng tốt, điều chi có nhân đức đáng khen, thì anh em phải nghĩ đến. 9 Hễ sự gì anh em đã học, đã nhận, đã nghe ở nơi tôi và đã thấy trong tôi, hãy làm đi, thì Đức Chúa Trời của sự bình an sẽ ở cùng anh em.”)
> This means to dwell in the words of God will make your heart having full of light. (C/ta phải cứ suy gẫm lời của Chúa để giữ cho tấm lòng luôn dầy dẫy sự sáng.)
> In Psalm 119:105, the psalmist writes the scriptures are the lamp guiding our life - “Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” (Trong Thi Thiên 119:105 tác gỉa viết lời Chúa là ngọn đèn soi sáng lối đi của đời sống c/ta – “Lời Chúa là ngọn đèn cho chân tôi, Ánh sáng cho đường lối tôi.”)
> Does your heart desire to go after the “deep” things of God? (Tấm lòng của bạn có ao ước thèm khát những điều sâu xa mầu nhiệm của Chúa không?)
# The increase in technology today is nice, but it creates a focus that many people just see the image and colors, and not the unseen and true meaning of life. (Với sự tiến bộ của kỹ thuật ngày nay là điều tốt, nhưng hình như nó tạo cho người ta chỉ biết chú tâm đếm màu sắc và hình ảnh bên ngoài mà không thể thấy những sự mầu nhiệm, ý nghĩa thầm kín bên trong.)
# Churches sometimes focus too much on the outside appearance which is temporary, and not “deep” into the eternal values. (Kể cả hội thánh Chúa cũng vậy, nhiều khi c/ta chú trọng quá nơi hình thức nghi lễ bên ngoài là những điều tạm thời, nhưng chưa thấy những ý nghĩa thiêng liêng Chúa muốn khải thị.)
# Do you see the messages through the praise songs we sing each Sunday or just the music beats? (Bạn có hiểu ý nghĩa của những lời ca ngợi c/ta hát mỗi sáng Chúa Nhật không, hay bạn chỉ thích những điệu nhạc kích động mạnh của nó?)
# Do you understand the deep meaning of the Bible studies and the preaching message, or just a routine religious exercise? (Bạn có hiểu ý nghĩa sâu xa trong lời Chúa qua bài học Kinh Thánh, qua nghe bài giảng không, hay chỉ nghe như là một thói quen của tôn giáo phải làm mà thôi?)
# So many people believe in God more on the emotional side based on the outside appearance, the crowd, and not deep into the truth of His words. (Có rất nhiều người tin Chúa chỉ vì sự cảm xúc bởi những hoàn cảnh bên ngoài, có thể vì con số đông người, nhưng chưa hiểu chi hết về những lẽ thật của lời Chúa.)
> We must have an eyesight that can absorb the unseen things “… since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:18). (C/ta phải có con mắt thông suốt được những điều mắt trần không thể thấy được, vì Kinh Thánh trong 2 Côrinhtô 4:18 có chép – “vì những sự thấy được chỉ là tạm thời, mà sự không thấy được là đời đời không cùng vậy.”)
> Not just about reading and understanding it, but “put it into practice.” (Chú ý là không phải chỉ hiểu biết lời Chúa mà thôi, nhưng con mắt mình phải đeo đuổi và giữ làm theo những điều mình đã biết nữa trong lòng.)
> A story of a young man came to a great philosopher and said: “I like your great teachings very much. I read a lot of your books, but I keep having a problem that is so quickly forget them all. So what should I do? The great master then gave the young man a basket and said – “Why don’t you take this basket, go down to the river and draw me some water, then I will answer you.” He first hesitated but then obeyed. But the problem was the basket had holes, so by the time he got back, the bucket was empty (no water) and he got frustrated. After a few times, then the master explained. You read my teachings, but if you do not remember to put them into practices then they are just useless liked this bucket with holes, and your life cannot change. (Câu chuyện về một chàng trai trẻ đi tìm một gíao sư tâm lý nổi tiếng và nói: “Tôi rất thích lời dạy dỗ của thầy. Tôi đọc nhiều cuốn sách của thầy sáng tác, nhưng tôi có trở ngại là sau khi đọc sau thì vài ngày sau là tôi lại quên liền, không nhớ gì hết, vậy thì tôi lên làm gì?” Ông thầy đưa cho chàng thanh nhiên một cái xô và nói: “Bây giờ tôi muốn anh lấy cái xô này xuống cái ao gần đây và múc cho tôi một ít nước, rồi tôi sẽ trả lời cho anh.” Mới đầu người trai trẻ lưỡng lự không muốn đi, nhưng sau chịu làm. Nhưng khổ nỗi cái xô nó có lỗ, cho nên khi anh xách về đến nhà thì xô hết nước làm anh rất bực mình. Sau vài lần thì ông thầy lên tiếng nói: “Anh đọc nhiều lời dạy dỗ hay, nhưng nếu anh không chịu thực hành làm theo ngay thì cũng vô ích mà thôi, giống như cái xô này có lỗ không giữ nước được, và cuộc sống của anh cũng sẽ không thay đổi gì hết đâu.)
> Each week, we must eagerly want to go to church to study the Bible and worship, go home and put the learnings to practice, so we don’t walk in darkness and ruin our life. (C/ta phải tìm kiếm, ham thích đi học Kinh Thánh và trung tín thờ phượng mỗi tuần, và ra về áp dụng làm theo, để c/ta không vấp ngã trong bóng tối mà dẫn đến chỗ hư mất sao?)
b) Allow the Holy Spirit to reigns your heart, not just residing there. (Cho phép Thánh Linh Chúa tể trị đời sống, chứ không chỉ để Ngài ngồi đợi trong tấm lòng của mình mà thôi.)
# Ephesians 5:8 Paul used a contrast metaphor, as strong drink controls the drunkard, we must let the Holy Spirit controls our heart, our eyes, and our ways of life – “Do not get drunk on wine, which ruins your life. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” (Trong Êphêsô 5:8, sứ đồ Phaolô dùng một hình ảnh đối chiếu, như rượu mạnh điều khiển một người say, thì c/ta phải để Chúa Thánh Linh tể trị tấm lòng, con mắt và lối sống của mình – “Đừng say rượu (đừng để bất cứ những thứ vât chất có gía trị tạm thời cai trị/điều khiển mình), vì rượu xui cho luông tuồng; nhưng phải đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh.”)
> Do not be under the control of the things of this world, could be uncleaned sexual desires, greed of money and power, prestige that damages others, jealousy, bitterness, anger … but let the Holy Spirit controls our minds and our behaviors to live for God and for His good will. (Đừng để những điều thuộc thế gian hay những dục vọng xấu xa, sự tham lam tiền bạc, quyền thế làm chủ mình, nhưng để Thánh Linh điều khiển tâm trí và nếp sống của mình sống luôn làm đẹp lòng Chúa.)
> So, a wise and healthy heart Christian would always seek the Holy Spirit first in every opportunity his eyes see, to pursue the things belong to God. (Như vậy một người cơ đốc khôn ngoan có tâm hồn sáng láng thì luôn tìm kiếm Thánh Linh trước tiên trong mọi điều con mắt mình thấy, và cuộc sống mình đeo đuổi những điều sâu kín thuộc của Chúa.)
# Why do we get in troubles all the times? (Tại sao c/ta gặp khó khăn hoài trong cuộc sống?)
> Because many times we fixed our mind on the unhealthy desires of our heart and left the Holy Spirit out of our decisions, and plans. (Lý do là vì nhiều khi c/ta chỉ đi theo tư dục xác thịt đòi hỏi và để Thánh Linh ở ngoài những sự quyết định và chương trình của Chúa.)
> We are not successful because we do not allow God guiding our ways. (C/ta không thành công trong con đường đời của mình, chỉ vì c/ta không cho phép Chúa hướng dẫn mình mà thôi.)

> Your life will be of light or full of darkness is your decision. (Cuộc sống của c/ta sẽ như thế nào, sáng hay tối tùy theo sự chọn lựa của mình.)
> God gives us the choice between life and death, good and evil, light or darkness, blessings or curses, healthy or unhealthy life. (Chúa cho mỗi người c/ta sự chọn lựa giữa sự sống hay chết, tốt lành hay xấu xa, sáng láng hay tối tăm, phước hạnh hay rủa sả.)
> We must choose which master we will serve in our heart. And Jesus made it clear that we can only serve one master, but the choice is ours to make. (Bạn và tôi phải chọn ai làm Chủ tấm lòng mình, vì Chúa Giê-xu đã nói rõ c/ta chỉ có thể đầu phục một Chủ mà thôi, nhưng phải quyết định chọn.)

> How will your life be in this New Year 2017?
a) It depends on the conditions of your heart – having full of light or darkness?
b) It depends on your eyesight to see, to determine the true values of everything?
c) It depends on how your body will pursue things in life either healthy or unhealthy?
d) And the consequence is either your life will be ruin or you will be blessed.
> Remember it always starts with the origin of your heart.
> The basic principle here is that you must keep your heart full of light, not darkness. How?
a) Start with placing your faith in Jesus Christ – Who is the Light of the world.
b) Feed your heart with the pure words of God.
c) Put Jesus’ teachings into practices everyday.
d) Allow the Holy Spirit to reign your heart in every decisions and plans.
> So you and I have a choice this morning.
> What do you do with what you hear this morning will determine your life in 2017.
> Make the wise choice – believe and follow Jesus! Do not delay any longer.
Healthy Eyes
Matthew 6:22-23a
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness…”
How is your eyesight? Is it perfect 20/20 vision? What’s about your perspective? Can you discern the correct value of all things? Don’t you know that how your life is, it depends on your eyesight – how you see things and determine their values. As a part of the Sermons on the mount, Jesus uses eyesight metaphor to illustrate this important point. Jesus used the eye as a metaphor symbolizing the understanding of the heart and its life pursuit, either for evil or for good. The process of seeing is ultimately connected to the origin of the heart. People will want to see what their hearts desire. If the heart is full of jealousy, through a person’s eyes, he will find ways to slander his enemies? If the heart is full of sexual thirst, through a person’s eyes, he will find many unclean things that can satisfy his heart desires, may be through pornography or having affairs. The root of unhealthy desires of the heart is a monster called “greed” for many things, such as prestige, power, sexual senses, and the most common is money.
Do you see some connections of what goes before and after of what Jesus said about “the eye is the lamp of the body.” Before verses 22-23, in verses 19-21, Jesus taught about not just gathering up treasures on earth, and one of earthly treasures is money. After verses 22-23, in verse 24, Jesus mentioned again about “You cannot serve both God and money.” Therefore, the sayings before and after Matthew 6:22-23 point to one of darkest desires in the heart is the greed for money, that a person can spend all of his life to chase after, and forgets his Creator. In the opposite of an unhealthy heart is a healthy heart, that through the eyes, a person can see the beauty of God’s grace and the brightness of His generosity. His eyes can see how to live a life that can be a blessing to others. With a heart full of light, a person can experience God’s loving kindness, Who always forgives his sins when he sincerely confesses them, that he can learn to forgive all who has done wrong to him. With a heart full of the fear of God, a person will desire to keep God’s commandments throughout his daily life. So, an unhealthy eye is a worldly eye; it only chases after the things of this world that are not eternal; but a healthy eye can truly see the beauty and precious things of God and go after those valuable things.
Why did Jesus say: “the eye is the lamp of the body?” The purpose of a lamp has not changed over times; its purpose is to provide light that dispels the darkness. The purpose of the lamp is to shine light which guides the body where to go and to do what the body desires. And through the eyes as a lamp of the soul which contains all the heart desires, a person pursues life with either healthy or unhealthy things. So the “body” here symbols of life pursuit of a person, our living to chase after or to seek things in this world, either unhealthy for the flesh or healthy for God’s kingdom.
To pursue healthy things through the eyes, we need a healthy heart; so our life, our living is not in ruin. How to do that? First, the condition of a heart healthy or unhealthy will depend on what you feed your heart with. America promotes a lot of ways to keep a healthy body by eating “organics” food, low fat, no carbs, no glutton… The same principle applies to our spiritual body to keep it having full of light. In Philippians 4:8-9 Paul listed the healthiest “organics” food for the soul – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” This means to dwell in the words of God will make your heart having full of light. Does your heart desire to go after the “deep” things of God? The increase in technology today is nice, but it creates a focus that many people just see the image and colors, and not the unseen and true meaning of life. Do you see the messages through the praise songs we sung each Sunday or just the music beats? Do you understand the deep meaning of the Bible studies and the preaching message, or just a routine religious exercise? We must have an eyesight that can absorb the unseen things “… since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:18). Not just about the knowledge of the truth, but we must “put it into practice.”
Secondly, you must allow the Holy Spirit to reigns your heart, not just residing there. Ephesians 5:8 Paul used a contrast metaphor, as strong drink controls the drunkard, we must let the Holy Spirit controls our heart, our eyes, and our ways of life. So, a wise and healthy heart Christian would always seek the Holy Spirit first in every opportunity his eyes see, to pursue the things belong to God.
You and I have the choice to choose a healthy life to please God or an unhealthy life that just satisfies our flesh. Your life will be of light or full of darkness is your decision. God gives us the choice between life and death, good and evil, light or darkness, blessings or curses, healthy or unhealthy. We must choose which master we will serve in our heart. And Jesus made it clear that we can only serve one master, but the choice is ours to make.
