May Mắn
(God’s Blessings)
Thi Thiên 128:1-4
“Phước cho người nào kính sợ Đức Giê-hô-va, đi trong đường lối Ngài! 2 Vì ngươi sẽ hưởng công việc của tay mình, được phước, may mắn. 3 Vợ ngươi ở trong nhà ngươi sẽ như cây nho thạnh mậu; Con cái ngươi ở chung quanh bàn ngươi khác nào những chồi ô-li-ve. 4 Kìa, người nào kính sợ Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ được phước là như vậy.”
(Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. 2 You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. 4 Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord.)
I. Chúc Tết
> Vietnamese New Year, called “Tet” is already here. (Một lần nữa, Tết Nguyên Đán lại trở về với những người Việt tha hương của chúng ta.)
> This New Year is the year of a rooster. (Hôm nay đã là mùng hai của Tết Đinh Dậu, Tết con gà)
> New Year always brings us joy, doesn’t matter where we live, or what a “rooster” means? ("Xuân về, Tết đến" lúc nào cũng mang lại nhiều niềm vui bâng khuâng cho người Việt của chúng ta đang sống khắp nơi trên thế giới, dù cho đang ở phương trời nào đi nữa, hay “con gà” nghĩa là gi.)
> Even though living in this country, Tet will never be the same as in Vietnam, we cannot forget some of the Vietnamese customs of celebrating Tet. (Có lẽ Tết Việt Nam không được vui nhộn, tưng bừng như ở quê nhà, có chỗ thì vẫn còn có tuyết rơi lạnh lẽo, nhưng là người Việt thì chúng ta không thể quên được những phong tục, tập quán hay truyền thống “Ăn Tết.")
> Some of our important traditions are playing with fire crackers, dragon dancing, planting “cherry blossom trees,” eating red watermelon seeds., and of course “lixi,” giving money in the red envelopes. (Nào là những phong tục thường có như là: đốt pháo, múa lân, cắm mai, hái lộc, ăn bánh chưng, củ kiệu, đủ loại thứ mứt trái cây, cắn hạt dưa, và lìxì là những điều phải có trong những ngày Tết vui!)
> And one thing that cannot be missed is to use nice words to bless each other. (Nhưng có một phong tục ăn tết nữa mà chắc chắn không thể thiếu được, đó là chúc Tết, nghĩa là dùng những “lời hay ý đẹp” để chúc phước cho nhau.)
# We usually wish each others “a successful year,” “increase in wealth health, and happiness,” “living a long live”… (Những câu chúc hay như là “vạn sự như ý,” an khang thịnh vượng, bình an khỏe mạnh, gia đình hạnh phúc, làm ăn phát tài, và được 3 điều quí là “Phước-Lộc-Thọ.”)
> The common idea in greeting each other is the wishing for prosperity. (Có lẽ lời chúc Tết đơn sơ và có ý nghĩa nhất đó là chúc nhau được nhiều may mắn.)
II. May Mắn
> What does prosperity mean? (May mắn nghĩa là sao quí vị?)
> It means pursuing many lucky opportunities to successfully achieve our goals and being flourished financially. (Nghĩa là bắt được nhiều dịp tiện, cơ hội tốt… và thành công trong mưu sự, những kế hoạch định của mình, gặt hái được nhiều của cải vật chất.)
# Lucky is when you go in for an interview and everthing goes well. (May mắn chẳng hạn như là đi vào phỏng vấn qua Mỹ giấy tờ được trôi chảy. Đi thi quốc tịch nhầm người phỏng vấn dễ ẹt, chỉ hỏi có vài câu thôi là cho đậu ngay.)
# Lucky is to open a business at the right time, right place and make a lot of money. (May mắn bắt được thời cơ mở tiệm làm giàu, tiền vô như nước, xài hoài không hết.)
# Lucky is to marry a dreamed man. (May mắn cưới được người chồng vừa sang vừa tài, tiếng Mỹ gọi là “the dream man.”)
# Lucky is to marry a right woman of your dream. (May mắn cưới được một người vợ đầy đủ 4 thứ công dung ngôn hạnh, chẳng còn chỗ nào chê hết.)
> Most people believe that good lucks or blessings come from Above. (Ai trong c/ta có niềm tin thì cũng nhận biết tất cả những may mắn, diệp tiện hay cơ hội tốt là do ông Trời ban cho.)
# Vietnamese farmers believe the blessings of good weather come from the Creator, so they can gather good harvests every year. (Những người nông dân Việt c/ta hay nói với nhau “trăm sự là nhờ Trời,” ban cho mưa thuận gió hòa thì mới được trúng mùa, được may mắn – “Lạy Trời mưa xuống, lấy nước tôi uống, lấy ruộng tôi cầy, lấy đầy bát cơm.”)
> We all know if God does not bless us with good health, we cannot eat the fruits of our labor or enjoy the works of our hands. (Nếu ông Trời không ban cho sức khỏe thì sao có sức làm việc và hưởng được hoa lợi của những công việc tay chân trí óc của mình làm ra.)
# In James 1:17 said – “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly light.” (Rõ ràng trong Kinh Thánh Gia-cơ 1:17 cũng có chép –"Mọi ân điển tốt lành cùng sự ban cho trọn vẹn đều đến từ nơi cao và bởi Cha (ông Trời) sáng láng mà (ban) xuống.”)
> But one reality that we all must accept is that all blessings on this earth will not last forever. (Nhưng có một điều căn bản mà ai trong c/ta cũng phải nhận thức đó là mọi phước lành và may mắn ở trên đời này thì chóng qua, không tồn tại mãi.)
> No matter how much things we have accumulated in our house; they will be all gone away one day. If they don’t go away, you & I will, and must leave everything behind to pass on to the next life. (Cho dù những may mắn này có tồn tại lâu dài đến đâu đi nữa, nhưng rồi mỗi người c/ta sẽ phải “ra đi” một ngày mà để lại tất cả.)
> In 1 Timothy 6:7 says – “For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” (Chính lời của Chúa trong Kinh Thánh 1 Timôthê 6:7 nhắc nhở – “Vì chúng ta ra đời chẳng hề đem gì theo, chúng ta qua đời cũng chẳng đem gì đi được.”)
> There was a famous king, named Solomon, who was very wise, and wealthy. (Trong Kinh Thánh có nói về một vị vua rất là được phước, giàu có, khôn ngoan và may mắn tên là Salômôn.)
> He became a king in 967 BC, and all of his reign, the country was prosperous, and in peace with others. (Thời của ông lên làm vua vào năm 967 BC, đất nước được bình an và thịnh vượng.)
# Solomon accumulated enormous wealth. Bible states that he owned 12,000 horses with horsemen and 1,400 chariots, you can think as “Lexus, Mercedes, some are Roll-Royces.” He had 700 wives and 300 concubines. (Vua Salômôn rất giàu có, có đến 12,000 con ngựa với người cưỡi cùng với 1,400 xe ngựa; Sống sung sướng có đến 700 người vợ cùng 300 nữ hầu.)
> Solomon also became known for his wisdom. People from surrounding nations also came to hear Solomon’s wisdom. He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs. He wrote the Song of Songs, the Book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. (Người được Chúa ban cho sự khôn ngoan trong việc sáng tác đến 3,000 bài châm ngôn, viết thành 1,005 bài hát; Trong Kinh Thánh Cựu Ước có 3 sách Salômôn chép: Sách Châm Ngôn, Truyền Đạo và Nhã Ca.)
> Solomon was also talented to build the Holy Temple which took seven years to complete. It was built of stone and cedar, carved within and overlaid with pure gold. (Salômôn có tài sản và cơ hội xây đền thờ cho Chúa, dùng những loại gỗ và thạch quí mà được mạ bằng vàng ở bên ngoài.)
> Solomon worked on many other building projects, and beautiful gardens. He spent 13 years building his own palace. (Salômôn có rất nhiều cơ hội tốt để hưởng và làm được nhiều việc thích thú trong cuộc sống, xây những vườn hoa nổi tiếng, kể cả cung điện của mình tốn đến 13 năm.)
> There was probably no enjoyment or pleasures on earth that Solomon did not experience. (Có lẽ không có thú vui gì trên đất mà vua Salômôn chưa biết, hay chưa hưởng được.)
> But near the end of his life, Solomon had a conclusion perspective of life in Ecclesiastes 1:14 – “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Nhưng rồi Salômôn có sự nhận định cuối cùng của mọi sự may mắn, thịnh vượng của đời mình như sau trong Truyền-đạo 1:14 vua nói – “Ta đã xem thấy mọi việc (mình) làm ra (ở) dưới mặt trời (thế gian này); kìa, (hết) thảy đều hư không, theo luồng gió thổi.”)
# In Ecclesiastes 2:11 he said – “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” (Trong Truyền-đạo 2:11 – “Đoạn ta xem xét (hết) các công việc tay mình đã làm, và sự lao khổ (cực nhọc) mình đã chịu để làm nó; kìa, mọi điều đó là sự hư không và theo luồng gió thổi, chẳng có ích lợi gì hết dưới mặt trời.”)
> Solomon did not mean all the things in this life had no value, but if you are about to pass through the curtain of death, facing the next life, then all the things on this side are useless/meaningless; because you cannot bring with you. (Không phải vua Salômôn muốn nói rằng mọi sự may mắn ở đời này không có gía trị gì hết, nhưng nếu chuẩn bị để bước qua cõi đời sau, thì tất cả đều là vô ích/hư không cho linh hồn của mình, vì mọi thứ ở đời này c/ta thậu nhặt được phải để lại hết, và không mang theo một thứ gì được.)
# Have you seen a hearse pulling a U-haul behind, storing stuffs for the dead person? (Có bao giờ quí vị thấy một xe tang kéo theo sau một chiếc xe U-haul chở đồ đạc cho người đã chết dùng không?)
# Don’t you know when a funeral home prepares for a corpse, the clothes they wear have “empty” pockets, because you cannot bring anthing with you? (Quí vị có biết là khi nhà quàn sửa soạn cho những xác chết để chôn, quần áo họ mặc có túi thấy bên ngoài, nhưng bên trong trống rỗng, không có ruột, là vì không ai chết rồi mà có thể đem một sự may mắn gì theo mình được.)
> Some Asian traditions during a funeral is to put money in the dead person’s coffin, thinking that the dead person can have money to spend over the next life, but they only put fake money. (Người đời có những phong tục bỏ tiền vào quan tài của người chết, vì nghĩ rằng để cho người đó xử dụng bên kia cõi đời này, nhưng việc làm này rất là mâu thuẫn; lý do là vì họ chỉ bỏ tiền gỉa, chứ đâu có ai dám bỏ tiền thật, vì tự biết người đã chết rồi đâu có xài được, và làm cớ cho ăn trộm đào lên lấy thôi.)
# Story of 3 men: one is business person, the second works for IRS, and the last one is a Christian. They have a close friend just passed away. (Câu chuyện của 3 người: một người làm nghề buôn bán, một người làm cho cơ quan của sở đóng thuế, và một người là cơ đốc nhân. Họ có một người bạn thân vừa qua đời.)
> On the funeral day, the business friend was so emotional sad; he pulls out a 100$ cash and put into his dead friend’s coffin, thinking to help his friend to have some money to spend on the other side of this life. (Trong ngày chôn cất, người bạn làm nghề buôn bán thương tiết bạn mình đã qua đời, cho nên anh móc ra tờ giấy 100 đôla mới tanh bỏ vào quan tài, nghĩ rằng cho người bạn mình có tiền xài bên kia thế giới này.)
> The IRS friend saw it, he also pulls out two 100$ bills and one 20$ bill to include taxes and put into his dead friend’s coffin. (Anh làm trong cơ quan sở đóng thuế thấy vậy cũng cảm động lấy ra 2 tờ giấy 100 đô la và một tờ giấy 20 đôla và nói: “Tôi cũng rất cảm động và muốn gởi cho người bạn đã chết của mình số tiền gấp đôi người buôn bán đã cho để xài, mà còn cộng thêm 10% để đóng thuế nữa.”)
> But the Christian friend steps up and said I will also give my dead friend some money to spend, equal to the sum of the first two friends gave; so he pulls out a check book, writes a check of 640$, put in the coffin and take 320$ cash back put in his pocket. (Anh cơ đốc nhân cũng bước đến và nói tôi sẽ cho người bạn của tôi số tiền bằng 2 người trước cho cộng lại, và rồi anh rút cái cuốn check book ra, ký cái check 640 đôla bỏ vào quan tài, và rồi lấy 320 đôla tiền mặt bỏ vào túi mình.)
> King Solomon gave some more wisdom about prosperity in this life in Ecclesiastes 4:4 – “And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Không phải vậy thôi, vua Salômôn còn nói trong Truyền-đạo 4:4 có khi những may mắn ở trên đời này lại gây sự khó khăn cho đời sống nữa – “Ta cũng thấy mọi công lao và mọi nghề khéo là điều gây cho người nầy kẻ khác ganh ghét nhau. Điều đó cũng là sự hư không, theo luồng gió thổi.”)
# For example, winning a lottery is lucky, but it may not always bring happiness, but disasters. (Trúng số độc đắc là may mắn, nhưng không phải ai cũng sung sướng mãi.)
> Survey shows that 60% who won lotteries may even experience a worse life, for the following reasons. (Người ta nói 60% của những người trúng số độc đắc sau này cuộc đời bị còn khổ hơn trước, với những lý do sau đây:)
1) After winning a lottery, you may have more enemies because people are jealous of you. (Sau khi trúng số trở nên giàu có sẽ có nhiều người khác ganh ghét, ganh tị vì nay mình giàu có hơn họ.)
2) After winning a lottery, there are many predators to come and want to get some of your money, some could be your own relatives. (Sẽ có rất nhiều người bạn gỉa từ đâu đó xuất hiện, có thể chính những người thân của mình, chỉ để dòm ngó ăn cướp của cải của mình mà thôi. Vô số người sau khi trúng số độc đắc phải trốn tránh, dấu tên vì sợ điều này.)
3) Many lottery winners fall into luxurious lifestyle living, beyond their budget and end up ruining their life and families. (Có tiền rồi thì bắt đầu ăn xài xả láng mà bị rớt vào những xoa đọa, vào những tệ trạng của xã hội như là rượu chè, cần sa, ma túy. Có khi còn bị nơ nần vì xài tiền như nước, ký biết bao nhiêu là những giao kèo, để rồi sau này hết tiền nhưng vẫn còn nợ vì những giao kèo này chưa trả xong.)
# An article in CNN in 2011 includes interview comments of some lottery winners: (Một bài viết của đài CNN vào năm 2011 có chép về một số người trúng độc đắc)
a) One lady in Texas won 1.3 millions said - After I won the lottery… then came the phone calls: promises, marriage proposals, accusations, threats. People who used to volunteer to help me do things wanted money for their trouble. Family members, she says, tried to run her life, and control her money. And she said - "Sometimes I wish I could change my name and go somewhere and hide." (Một người phụ nữ ở Texas thắng 1.3 triệu nói: “Sau khi thắng rồi thì điện thoại bắt đầu reng, nào là nhiều lời hứa hẹn, có người muốn lập gia đình với cô ngay, kể cả có những lời lên án, đe dọa. Có những người ngày xưa hay tự nguyện giúp đỡ mình, gọi lại đòi trả tiền cho họ. Kể cả những người trong nhà muốn điều khiển số tiền của cô có. b) Another family in Washington State who won 380 millions said - "all we saw were predators and we were afraid to do anything until we got down here with police protection." (Một gia đình khác trúng 380 triệu cũng nói: “Sau khi trúng số độc đắc, ở đâu không biết mà “thú dữ” xuất hiện đến dành tiền của gia đình họ, đến nỗi họ phải chạy ngay đến bót cảnh sát nhờ bảo vệ.”)
> In Psalm 128 gives a picture of the best life prosperity begins with a family having a man who fears God, and his wife and children live in joy, and gladness – “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.” (Thi Thiên 128 cho thấy hình ảnh của một cuộc sống may mắn bắt đầu từ người đàn ông trong gia đình biết kính sợ Chúa, cùng với người vợ và con cái sống trong sự vui mừng – “Phước cho người nào kính sợ Đức Giê-hô-va, đi trong đường lối Ngài! Vì ngươi sẽ hưởng công việc của tay mình, được phước, may mắn. 3 Vợ ngươi ở trong nhà ngươi sẽ như cây nho thạnh mậu; Con cái ngươi ở chung quanh bàn ngươi khác nào những chồi ô-li-ve.”)
> The fear of the Lord is a healthy respect and reverence for God, from the knowledge of God’s power, greatness and holiness and resulting in obedience to Him. (Kính sợ Chúa là một điều sợ tốt lành trong sự kính mến và hiểu biết về quyền năng, sự thánh khiết của Ngài, dẫn đến sự vâng phục làm theo điều Chúa phán dạy mà được may mắn.)
> Life prosperity is a happy family with full contentment, eating the fruits of their labor and enjoying the works of their hands, that God blesses from generations to generations. (Sự may mắn trong đời sống là hình ảnh của một gia đình hạnh phúc đầy sự thỏa lòng, được hưởng những công việc của tay mình làm ra mà Chúa ban phước cho, từ đời này đến đời nọ, đến con cháu chít chắt của mình nữa.)
> There are so many families in this wealthy nation that have a lot of money in the banks, but lacking the happiness in their homes, because the men in these houses do not fear God, only chasing after the meaningless things of this world. (Có rất nhiều gia đình trong đất nước giàu có này, họ có nhiều tiền trong nhà bank, nhưng lại không có hạnh phúc gia đình lâu dài, là bởi vì những người đàn ông trong những gia đình này chưa biết kính sợ Chúa, chỉ biết đeo đuổi những điều “hư không” ở trên đời này mà thôi.)
III. Cơ Hội Được Nghe Tin Lành
> A wise person does not just seek the worldly prosperity, but also the eternal blessing beyond this life. (Người khôn ngoan không chỉ tìm cầu sự may mắn ở đời này mà thôi, nhưng trong cõi đời đời nữa.)
> How to find it? (Nhưng tìm được ở đâu đây vì đây là sự huyền bí lớn cho loài người.)
> To find it, we must have a basic faith of the existence of a great Creator Who want to bless everyone of us with the eternal life in His heavenly kingdom. (Muốn tìm được câu trả lời, c/ta phải có một niềm tin căn bản về Đấng Tạo Hóa chí cao, mà người Việt gọi là “Ông Trời,” đã dựng nên loài người, chỉ có Ngài mới có thể ban cho sự may mắn trường tồn, đó chính là được hưởng nước thiên đàng của Ngài.)
> But how can we live in heaven when we are all sinners and God is perfectly holy? (Nhưng làm sao vào thiên đàng mà hưởng được đây, khi loài người là tội nhân còn Đức Chúa Trời là Đấng Thánh Khiết?
# In Job 21:13 speaks the truth about the destination of human life – “They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol (place of the dead).” (Kinh Thánh trong Gióp 21:13 có chép lẽ thật phũ phàng định mệnh của đời sống loài người đó là dù cho có được bao nhiêu may mắn đến đâu đi nữa thì sự kết thúc của loài người là sự chết đời đời vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội – “Chúng nó may mắn trải qua các ngày đời mình, rồi bỗng chốc sa xuống âm phủ.”)
> The truth of this life is we will all end up in death, and after is the judgment because all have sinned against God. (Mọi sự may mắn ở đời này rồi sẽ kết thúc trong nước mắt đau thương của sự chết, và theo sau là sự phán xét, vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội nghịch cùng Đấng Tạo Hóa, và tội lớn nhất là không nhận biết Ngài để thờ lạy và hầu việc.)
> But the loving God has promised to give us all an unconditional blessing in Proverbs 28:13 – “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Nhưng may mắn thay vì trong Châm-ngôn 28:13 có lời của Chúa đã hứa – “Người nào giấu tội lỗi mình sẽ không được may mắn; Nhưng ai xưng nó ra và lìa bỏ nó sẽ được thương xót.”)
> This means whoever acklowledge his sins, repent, ask God for forgiveness in Christ Jesus, His Son, then that person will receive the eternal prosperity of God’s heavenly kingdom. (Nghĩa là ai bằng lòng xưng tội mình ra và nhận biết Chúa là Đấng ban cho sự may mắn trường tồn, chính là sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng, qua Con Ngài là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu.)
# The Bible in 1 John 5:11-12 gives that testimony – “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (Trong 1 Giăng 5:11-12 có lời chứng – “Chứng ấy tức là Đức Chúa Trời đã ban sự sống đời đời cho chúng ta, và sự sống ấy ở trong Con Ngài. Ai có Đức Chúa Con thì có sự sống; ai không có Con Đức Chúa Trời thì không có sự sống.”)
# Romans 6:23 gives us this promise – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Trong Rôma 6:23 có chép lời Chúa hứa – “Vì tiền công của tội lỗi là sự chết; nhưng sự ban cho của Đức Chúa Trời là sự sống đời đời trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, Chúa chúng ta.”
> This is the greatest prosperity because God gives to us unconditionally. (Ơn này là may mắn lắm, bởi vì sự ban cho này của Chúa đến bất cứ ai muốn nhận, mà sẽ không đòi một gía nào hết.)
# Romans 10:13 guarantees this unconditional prosperity – “for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Rôma 10:13 bảo đảm sự may mắn không điều kiện này – “Vì ai kêu cầu danh Chúa thì sẽ được cứu.”)
> This means you can just put your name in here and claim it for yourself. (Đây có nghĩa là bạn chỉ đặt tên mình vào mà nhận lấy sự may mắn này cho chính mình mà thôi.)
# When you buy products advertised with a slogan “But one gets one free,” you feel very lucky, but actually the condition is you must buy one first. (Nhiều món hàng bán on sale với lời quản cáo – “mua một tặng một,” thì quí vị thấy đây rất là may mắn rồi, phải không; nhưng điều kiện là bạn phải mua một trước.)
> But God’s gift of His heavenly kingdom is even better, because it’s a gift, you do not need to do anything or to buy anything first, just receive it for yourself. (Còn ơn cứu chuộc của Chúa ban cho thì chẳng phải trả một gía nào hết, vì Con Ngài là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu đã trả đủ cho tội lỗi của bạn ở trên cây thập tự rồi, thì còn may mắn hơn đến chừng nào?)
> Whoever believe in God through His Son Jesus He sent, then that person is “lucky, blessed” to become God’s children and enjoy His kingdom one day. (Bất cứ ai bằng lòng tin Con Đức Chúa Trời thì mọi tội của người đó được sạch, được may mắn làm con cái Ngài, mà một ngày được hưởng nước thiên đàng của Chúa mãi mãi nữa.)
> This New Year you are “lucky” because you are here, and have a chance to hear this great News; so do not let it pass you by, but just receive the gift by placing your trust in Jesus Christ alone. (Tết này quí vị được may mắn đến đây nghe được Tin Vui Chúa ban cho sự cứu rỗi không điều kiện, một mùa Xuân mãi mãi trên thiên đàng, vậy thì quí vị phải bắt lấy dịp tiện, cơ hội tốt này mà hạ mình, tin nhận Con Trời để được rỗi linh hồn đi, nếu không thì uổng cả một cuộc đời sao?)

New Year Prosperity
Psalm 128
“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. 2 You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. 4 Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord. 5 May the Lord bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6 May you live to see your children’s children—peace be on Israel.”
Vietnamese New Year, called “Tet” is already here. This New Year is the year of a rooster. New Year always brings us joy, doesn’t matter where we live, or what a “rooster” mean. Even though living in this country, Tet will never be the same as in Vietnam, but we cannot forget some of the Vietnamese customs of celebrating Tet. Some of our important traditions are playing with fire crackers, dragon dancing, planting “cherry blossom trees,” eating red watermelon seeds., and of course “lixi,” giving money in the red envelopes. And one thing that cannot be missed is to use nice words to bless each other. Blessed words that we usually use to wish each others are “a successful year,” “increase in wealth health, and happiness,” “living a long life…” The common idea in greeting each other is the wishing for prosperity.
What does prosperity mean? It means catching lucky opportunities to successfully achieve our goals and being flourished financially. Most people believe that good lucks or blessings come from Above. But one reality that we all must accept is that all blessings on this earth will not last forever. No matter how much things you have accumulated in your house; they will be all gone away one day. If they don’t go away, you will and must leave everything behind to pass on to the next life. There was a famous king, named Solomon, who was very wise, and wealthy. He became a king in 967 BC, and all of his reign, the country was prosperous, and in peace with others. Solomon accumulated enormous wealth. Bible states that he owned 12,000 horses with horsemen and 1,400 chariots. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Solomon also became known for his wisdom. People from surrounding nations also came to hear Solomon’s wisdom. He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs. He wrote the Song of Songs, the Book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Solomon was also talented to build the Holy Temple which took seven years to complete. Solomon worked on many other building projects, and beautiful gardens. He spent 13 years building his own palace. There was probably no enjoyment or pleasures on earth that Solomon did not experience. But near the end of his life, Solomon had a conclusion perspective of life in Ecc. 1:14 – “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” Solomon did not mean all the things in this life had no value, but if you are about to pass through the curtain of death, facing the next life, then all of these things are useless/meaningless; because you cannot bring with you. Have you seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul behind, storing stuffs for the dead person? So the greatest prosperity in this world is probably just to live a life with contentment, having a good job, food on the table and family happiness every day, as said in Psalm 128.
A wise person does not just seek the worldly prosperity, but also the eternal one beyond this life. How to find it? To find it, we must have a basic faith of an existed great Creator Who want to bless every one of us with the eternal life in His heavenly kingdom. But how can we live in heaven while we are all sinners and God is perfectly holy? The truth of this life is we will all end up in death and after is the judgment because all have sinned against God. But the loving God has promised to give us all an unconditional blessing in Proverbs 28:13 – “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” This means whoever accepts his sins, repent, ask God for forgiveness in Christ Jesus, His Son, then that person will receive the eternal prosperity of God’s heavenly kingdom. The Bible in 1 John 5:11-12 gives that testimony – “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” This is the greatest blessing because God gives to us unconditionally. When you can buy products advertised as “but one gets one free,” you feel very lucky, but actually the condition is you must buy one first. But God’s gift of His heavenly kingdom is even better, because it’s a gift, you do not need to do anything or to buy anything first, just receive it for yourself. Whoever believe in God through His Son Jesus He sent then that person is “lucky, blessed” to become God’s children and enjoy His kingdom one day.
This New Year you are “lucky” because you are here, and have a chance to hear this great News; so do not let it pass you by, but just receive the gift by placing your trust in Jesus Christ alone. May you not hardened your mind any longer, but open your heart and place your faith in Jesus Christ and be blessed, be prosperous this New Year.
