"Đức Chúa Jêsus lại cất tiếng phán cùng chúng rằng: Ta là sự sáng của thế gian; người nào theo Ta, chẳng đi trong nơi tối tăm, nhưng có ánh sáng của sự sống."
(When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”)
I. Christmas

# Don’t you know that Christmas has the most number of songs in all holiday seasons. (Mùa Giáng Sinh phải là mùa lễ mà có nhiều những bản nhạc được sáng tác nhất.)
# The Internet estimates that there are more than million Christmas songs today, or to be exact 914,047 songs in 2014 were created by about 63,711 artists. (Internet ước lược trong Giáng Sinh năm 2014 có khoãng 914,047 bài hát Giáng Sinh đã được sáng tác bởi khoãng 63,711 nhạc sĩ.)
> We don’t get bore listening to Christmas music, because they keep speading joy in our heart. (Nhạc Giáng Sinh nghe không bao giờ chán, bởi vì lời nhạc luôn đem đến cho người nge sự vui mừng hân hỉ.)
> Is there any sad Christmas song? I cannot think of one. (Thử hỏi có bài nhạc Giáng Sinh nào mà buồn không? Tôi không biết một bài nào hết.)

> The darker the atmosphere, the brighter the Christmas lights which bring us the indescribable joy and excitement. (Trời càng tối thì đèn chớp càng sáng rực rỡ, đem đến cho c/ta một niềm vui hân hoan tìm ẩn trong lòng, không kể siết được.)
II. The Light of Christmas
> But the true meaning of Christmas is about a greater Light of a different kind. (Nhưng ý nghĩa thật của đại lễ Giáng Sinh có liên quan đến một vì Sáng Lớn khác thường.)
> Because this Light is about a Person, the glorious Son of God, named Jesus Christ, Who came down from heaven more than 2,000 years ago. (Bởi vì ánh sáng lớn này có liên hệ đến một Đấng Vinh Hiển, Con Đức Chúa Trời, Ngài có tên là Chúa Giê-xu Christ, đã từ trời vinh quang giáng xuống thế gian hơn 2,000 năm trước đây.)
> This greatest “light” shining on the first Christmas was recoreded in the three Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. (Sự giáng xuống của vì Sáng Lớn này được ghi chép trong 3 sách Tin Lành Mathiơ, Mác và Luca.)
1) The coming of this great light was first prophesized many years before Jesus came. (Sự đến của vì Sáng Lớn này trước hết đã được các vị tiên tri nói trước.)
> The prophecy from Isaiah 9:2, about 700 years before Jesus came, mentioned about a great light would shine on the people walking in darkness – “... the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” (Lời tiên tri trong sách Êsai 9:2 đã nói trước về một vì Sáng Lớn, sẽ đến rọi chiếu trên một dân đang sống trầm luân trong chỗ tối tăm, là bóng của sự chết.)
> Why were the people living in darkness? Didn’t they have electricity? (Tại sao dân này sống trong chỗ tối tăm? Bộ họ không có đèn điện hay đèn dầu sao?)
# This darkness is not in a physical sense, but it talks about their spiritual hopeless, due to the darkness of sins. (Sự tối tăm đây không có nghĩa trong phương diện thuộc thể mắt thấy, nhưng nói đến tình trạng tội lỗi và sự tuyệt vọng của loài người đang bị giam cầm ở dưới sự thống trị của quyền lực ma quỉ và satan, mà cần được thoát ra khỏi.)
a) First, this darkness directly pointed to the downgraded moral condition of God’s people at that time for they denied Him, but worshipped all kinds of idols in the foreign land. (Trực tiếp chữ “tối tăm” này nói đến tình trạng đạo đức suy đồi của chính dân sự của Chúa lúc đó đang đi thờ lạy các tà thần, bắt chước theo các tôn giáo của dân ngoại bang ở xứ Cana-an, mà chối bỏ Đức Chúa Trời.)
# In 2 Kings 21:6 recorded under the reign of King Manasseh – “He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spirits. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.” (Trong 2 Các Vua 21:6 có chép về đời vua thứ 14 có tên là Manase thuộc nước Guiđa miền Nam, cũng cùng một thời điểm với tiên tri Êsai đã làm gì? - “Người (vua Manase) đưa con trai mình qua lửa, tập tành phép thiên văn và việc bói điềm; lập lên những đồng cốt và thầy bói. Người làm điều ác trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va quá chừng, chọc giận Ngài hoài.”)
b) Darkness can also be reflected as a slavery of greed, jealousy, hatred, bitterness, all kinds of addictions, liked being chained in a spiritual prison that has no bars. (Sự “tối tăm” còn là hình ảnh về tình trạng của một người đang bị buộc trói trong sự tham lam, mê đắm, nghiện ngập, giống như là một thế giới ngục tù vô hình đang giam cầm, điều khiển, sai khiến người đó, mà không sao thoát ra được.)
i) Today, some people are controlled by the darkness of drugs that they are willing to sell anything, or do anything to get a little “high” and die. (Bị điều khiển sai khiến làm những điều vô tâm, ác độc, bởi sự nghiện ma túy cần sa… đến nỗi có người đem chính con nhỏ mình, chưa tới 1 tuổi bán đi, chỉ để có chút tiền mua thuốc phiện hút laân cuối rồi chết.)
ii) Some people are slavery to the darkness of gambling to the point they have no life and nothing. (Có những người ham mê cờ bạc đến nỗi bằng lòng bỏ vợ, bỏ con, bắn chồng, bán sạch căn nhà, bán tiệm đổ hết vào sòng bài.)
c) Others are salvery to pornography and finds no escapre route. (Kẻ khác thì đang sống nô lệ bởi những hình ảnh, hay cuộn phim ô dâm mà không sao tìm ra lối thoát.)
# Darkness chains many people under a wicked lifestyle. (Sự tối tăm nói đến tình trạng của một đời sống chìm đắm trong tội lỗi và những việc ác.)
# I used to do visitation at Vinh Phat area during late evenings. I noticed that why all the street lights shine no light. / Later someone explained to me that those who deal drugs at night in that area kept destroying the street lights; so in darkness, they could do their business easier to the point that the electric company got tired of fixing them.
c) Don’t you know that in America today, one out of 5 people live under the serious depression disease? (Bạn có biết là ngay tại nước Mỹ giàu có này, có biết bao nhiêu người đang sống trong tối tăm, sự tuyệt vọng, chán chường, rớt vào một căn bệnh nguy hiểm đó là bịnh “depression” không?)
# Thống kê cho biết ở Mỹ mỗi năm có khoãng 32,000 người chết tự xát (suicidal) trong số của khoãng 2.3 triệu người toan tính có chương trình muốn tự xát, nhưng không thành công.
> Don’t you know that suicidal is ranked No. 4 in US today. (Tự xát là nan đề lớn thứ 4 gây nên sự chết nhiều nhất trong nước Mỹ hiện nay.)
> Why this is happening in a country that is so wealthy? (Tại làm sao mà trong một đất nước văn minh đầy đủ, giàu có, không thiếu thốn điều gì mà lại có những chuyện này xảy ra?)
# Because of the darkness of sins covering all people. (Vì quyền lực của “bóng tối” tội lỗi từ satan/ma quỉ đang bao phủ trên đời sống của cả nhân loại, không chừa một nơi nào hết.)
d) Even worse than that, the Bible said these people are living in the shadow of death. (Không phải tối tăm là tình trạng bi đát của thế giới mà thôi, nhưng sự tối tăm này còn có nghĩa là “bóng của sự chết,” sự hư mất đời đời trong lửa địa ngục một ngày.)
> Since the day after Adam & Eve sinned in the garden, people are under the curse of death. (Từ khi Ađam & Êva phạm tội, loài người ở dưới sự rủa sả của sự chết.)
> Death is our meanest enemy that no one can escape, and nothing we can do to get out of this curse. (Sự chết là kẻ thù dữ nhất của sự sống laòi người mà không ai thoát khỏi cái nọc sự chết của nó được.)
> It started with Adam & Eve and are contagious to every human beings, just as the Bible said: “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12)” (Con vi trùng sửa sự chết này bắt đầu từ Ađam và lan truyền ra cho mọi người.)
> All of us, one by one will have to face death, who respects no one, doesn’t matter how intelligent, healthy, powerful or rich you are. (Mỗi người c/ta không chừa một ai hết phải đối diện với thần chết gọi tên mình, không cần biết c/ta là ai giàu hay nghèo, khôn hay dại.)
# We hear on the daily news that famous people do die. (Mỗi ngày c/ta thường nghe tin kể cả những người nổi tiếng đến đâu đi nữa cũng đều chết.)
# Nhiều người sống luôn đi tìm đủ mọi thứ thuốc hay có chất Collagen, những phương pháp dưỡng sinh tốt, để được sống trẻ, sống được lâu, nhưng chỉ kéo dài cuộc sống một thời gian ngắn mà thôi, rồi mọi người ai nấy cũng sẽ đến lúc chịu thua tử thần khi nó gọi tên mình.
> But the prophecy also said the people living in darkness would see a light. (Nhưng giữa sự tối tăm thuộc về bóng của sự chết đó thì có lời tiên tri về sự Sáng Lớn.)
> This light was about a Savior, Who is from the land of glorious light of God, will come to bring them out of darkness. (Ánh sáng lớn đó chính là Con Đức Chúa Trời mà hơn 2,000 năm trước đây đã giáng thế trong giáng sinh đầu tiên để cứu loài người ra khỏi bóng của sự chết… và dẫn đưa loài người trở về với “Nguồn Sáng Thiên Thượng.”)
> How do you push away darkness? Very simple, you just turn on the light. (Làm sao bạn đẩy sự tối tăn đi? Dễ thôi, chỉ cần bật đèn sáng lên.)
> How do you push away death? (Làm sao bạn đẩy sự chết đi?)
# You need Jesus Christ, the Living God – Who came into the world on the first Christmas, later died on the cross for our sins, then was raised after three days… to crush the head of satan and his sting of death. (Đó là khi Đấng Christ sanh ra đời trong Giáng Sinh đầu tiên, để rồi chết trên cây thập tự và sống lại sau 3 ngày, mà chà đạp đầu con rắn là satan có nọc của sự chết.)
> That’s why when Jesus came, He proclaimed something that no other before Him or after Him ever declares, and that is “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." He brings us out of the darkness of sins. (Vì vậy mà trong Giăng 8:12 Chúa Giê-xu đã tuyên bố một điều mà trước Ngài hay sau Chúa chưa có ai dám xưng - "Ta là sự sáng của thế gian; người nào theo ta, chẳng đi trong nơi tối tăm, nhưng có ánh sáng của sự sống." Ngài đem c/ta ra khỏi bóng tối của tội lỗi và nọc của sự chết.)
2) Jesus as “the Light of the world” means that He came to give us HOPE. (Chúa Giê-xu là Ánh Sáng Lớn nghĩa là Ngài đem đến cho c/ta sự hy vọng.)
# We are living in a time that we need a lot of hope: The world hopes for peace; America hopes that the new elected president who will bring a better economy for the country, and make “America great again.” (C/ta đang sống trong một thời điểm rất cần nhiều sự hy vọng: Thế giới đang trông đợi sự hòa bình; Người dân Mỹ đang hy vọng vị tổng thống mới sẽ đem nền kinh tế của đất nước khá hơn.)
> Jesus came to give us hope with the promise of the eternal life in heaven with God. (Chúa Giê-xu đến đem cho c/ta sự trông cậy của sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng.)
> A place that the Bible in Revelation 21:4 describes “no more tears, no more death, or mourning or crying or pain…” (Thiên đàng là nơi mà được diễn tả trong Khải Huyền 21:4 như sau – “Ngài sẽ lau ráo hết nước mắt khỏi mắt chúng, sẽ không có sự chết, cũng không có than khóc, kêu ca, hay là đau đớn nữa; vì những sự thứ nhất đã qua rồi.”)
> Also, there will be no more wicked people in heaven as said in Galatians 5:19-21 – “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Alleuiah! (Ở đó cũng không còn những kẻ ác và việc dữ nữa như lời Chúa có chép trong Galati 5:19-21 - “Vả, các việc làm của xác thịt là rõ ràng lắm: ấy là gian dâm, ô uế, luông tuồng, 20 thờ hình tượng, phù phép, thù oán, tranh đấu, ghen ghét, buồn giận, cãi lẫy, bất bình, bè đảng, 21 ganh gổ, say sưa, mê ăn uống, cùng các sự khác giống như vậy. Tôi nói trước cho anh em, như tôi đã nói rồi: hễ ai phạm những việc thể ấy thì không được hưởng nước Đức Chúa Trời.”)
> “Death is not the end,” when we pass over this life… to become a bug, a dog, a chicken, or a rat; but to those who believe in Jesus - “death is the beginging of the eternal life. (Những kẻ nào tin Chúa biết rõ “chết không phải là hết,” không phải đầu thai thành những con bọ, con sâu, con muỗi, con cắt kè, bị đạp lên; nhưng là bước qua một thế giới mới vinh hiển gọi là thiên đàng, là nơi chúng ta sẽ có mối liên hệ trực tiếp với Đức Chúa Trời, Đấng đã sáng tạo nên chúng ta và hưởng mọi phước lành của Ngài đời đời.)
> In heaven, God will reign in a perfect peace without any flaws, unjustice, corruptions, lies, oppression, bullies, bribes, cheats, hackings… you named it. (Nơi đó Đức Chúa Trời sẽ tể trị một cách tòan hảo, không còn những việc ác nữa.)
> And the church will reign with Him, judging even the angels. (Và hội thánh Chúa sẽ cùng đồng trị với Chúa, kể cả đoán xét các thiên sứ.)
3) Not just the past, when the Light of Jesus took away all our sins, not just in the future, the Light of Jesus gives us hope waiting for heaven, but also for the present, the Light of Jesus is guiding each of our steps until we all reach our final destination. (Không chỉ quá khứ mà Ánh Sáng Lớn của Giê-xu đã xóa sạch mọi tội của c/ta, không chỉ tương mà Ánh Sáng Lớn của Giê-xu đem đến cho c/ta sự hy vọng chờ đợi nước thiên đàng, nhưng Chúa có hiện diện ngay bây giờ để hướng dẫn c/ta trong mọi bước.)
> Everybody knows that we need light to guide our paths at night. (Ích lợi của sự sáng rọi chiếu... còn là để chúng ta thấy được đường đi trong bóng tối.)
> What happens if you drive in the dark without any light? You would not go too far, right. (Chuyện gì xảy ra khi c/ta lái xe ban đêm mà không bật đèn? Bạn sẽ lái không xa được đâu.)
> Before Jesus ascended up in heaven, He said one of the greatest promises in Matthew 28:20b – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Trước khi Chúa Giê-xu thăng thiên về trời, Ngài có hứa – “Và nầy, ta thường ở cùng các ngươi luôn cho đến tận thế.”)
> Today, the Light of Jesus is always with us through the Holy Spirit, Who teaches, guides, reminds, seals, powers, blesses, protects us every moment of our life. (Ngày hôm nay, Chúa luôn ờ cùng mỗi c/ta qua Thần Linh Ngài, là Đấng dạy dỗ, hướng dẫn, nhắc nhở, đóng ấn và ban cho mỗi người quyền phép của Chúa.)
> There is nothing safer than when Jesus Christ, the great Light through His Spirit is walking with you every steps. (Không có gì an toàn cho bằng khi Thánh Linh Ngài cùng đi với c/ta mỗi ngày.)
# It is better than all the body guards who are protecting the US president, because the Holy Spirit never sleeps. (Còn an ninh hơn là những kẻ hộ tống tổng thống vậy, vì Ngài không hề ngủ.)
# There would be no temptation battle that you cannot overcome with His help. (Không có một sự cám dỗ nào mà c/ta không thắng được nếu nhờ cậy sức Ngài.)
# There would be no problem that you don’t have the answer for. (Không có một nan đề nào mà c/ta không có sự giải cứu nếu có sự nhờ cậy Chúa.)
> Today, Jesus as the Holy Spirit comes to give us the overcoming power to all kinds and forms of despair, fears and doom, but peace and joy. (Hôm nay, sự sáng của Chúa Giê-xu đem đến cho mọi kẻ tin quyền năng thắng được mọi quyền lực tối tăm của ma quỉ đã đem đến cho c/ta biết bao nhiêu sự buồn phiền, lo sợ và tuyệt vọng.)
# Countless number of people used to live a life with all kinds of fears due to superstitions, bad lucks, evil spirits… but now they are set free because Jesus’ Spirit walks with them, protects them, guides them, cares for them every steps. (Có biết bao nhiêu người ngày xưa cuộc sống bị đe dọa bởi những “tin dị đoan,” lúc nào cũng lo sợ bị xui xẻo, bị hạm hại bởi các tà thần, sợ bóng tối, sợ ma quỉ; cho đến khi họ tin nhận Cứu Chúa Giê-xu thì kinh nghiệm một cuộc đời “buông tha” tự do, vì có Chúa là Cha và mắt Ngài hằng đoái đến, quan tâm, chăm sóc, và bảo vệ mình.)
> The problem is not whether this power is available, but the problem is whether you & I allow Jesus’ Spirit to walk with us every moments of our life, not just on Sunday, but from Monday through Sunday. (Vấn đề không phải là quyền năng của sự sáng này không có, nhưng là c/ta có cho phép Thần Linh Chúa cùng đi và hướng dẫn c/ta trong mọi bước, không phải chỉ vài tiếng đồng hồ trong ngày Chúa Nhật thôi, nhưng từ thứ Hai đến Chúa Nhật.)
# A logo behind a car has a phrase: “Jesus is my co-pilot,” I think this is an incorrect theology and it should change to “Jesus is my only Pilot.” (Có một bản hiệu gắn sau một chiếc xe như sau: “Chúa Giê-xu là tài xế lái xe phụ của đời tôi,” Tôi không nghĩ đây là lẽ thật, nhưng cần đổi lại: “Chỉ có Chúa Giê-xu là Tài Xế duy nhất của cả đời tôi.”)
# We get lost because we don’t follow close to Jesus; we fail because we don’t give the wheel of our life to Jesus to control; we fall into ditches and holes because we don’t have the Light of Christmas shining on our steps. (C/ta đi lạc đường là vì c/ta không chịu đi theo Chúa Giê-xu; c/ta thất bại vì chưa trao tay lái xe của đời mình cho Ngài hoàn toàn điều khiển; c/ta vẫn còn bị xuống hố là vì chưa để Ánh sáng Lớn của Giáng Sinh soi sáng mọi lối mình đi.)
> We need to know that we do not control our life. (C/ta cần ý thức c/ta không có điều khiển đời sống mình.)
# Many years ago, a plane was exploded due to bomb attacked by terriorsts; everyone died on that plane except one student was spared. The reason because she woke up late and missed the plane that morning. During an interview, she said: “After this tragedy, I realize that I do not control my life anymore. And the sad thing is that - why it takes a terrible tragedy liked this to help us knowing that?” (Nhiều năm trước đây có một vụ máy bay bị bỏ bom bởi nhóm phá hoại; mọi người trên chiếc máy bay đó đều bị giết hết; ngoại trừ có một cô học sinh còn sống sót. Lý do cô còn sống là vì sáng hôm đó cô thức dậy trễ và không bắt kịp được chuyến máy bay. Khi người ta phỏng vấn cô, cô trả lời: “Sau tai họa này, tôi mới ý thức được một điều đó là tôi không điều khiển cuộc đời của mình. Mà điều đáng buồn là tại sao phải có những tai họa này xảy ra như vậy để c/ta ý thức được điều này.”)
> Yes, we do not control our life destiny; we only can trust Jesus Who can. (Đúng như vậy, c/ta không điều khiển cuộc đời của mình, chỉ có thể nhờ cậy Chúa Giê-xu là Đấng có thể làm được thôi.)
> So Christmas reminds us the Great Light, Jesus Christ, Who came to bring us out the darkness of sins, Who gives us hope of the eternal life in heaven, and Who guides our steps to live a victorious life. (Cho nên Giáng Sinh nhắc nhở c/ta về vì Ánh Sáng Lớn, chính là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu, Đấng đã đến đem c/ta ra khỏi bóng tối của tội lỗi, Đấng đến ban cho c/ta sự trông cậy của nước thiên đàng, và là Đấng hướng dẫn mọi bước c/ta sống trong một cuộc đời đắc thắng khỏi mọi quyền lực của ma quỉ.)
# For that reason, the apostle John said in John 1:4-5 - “In Him (Jesus) was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness.” (Vì đó mà sứ đồ Giăng đã nói trong Giăng 1:4-5 – “Trong Ngài (Chúa Giê-xu) có sự sống, sự sống là sự sáng của loài người. Sự sáng soi trong tối tăm.”)
III. Many Bright Stars Shining
> Don’t forget that Christmas is not just about the decorated electric lights, but the lights of many billion people have been saved by Jesus; Now their transformed live are shining in this dark world liked many bright stars, leading people to the Savior Jesus. (Đừng quên Giáng Sinh không chỉ có những ánh đèn màu rực rỡ mà thôi, nhưng ánh sáng của cả tỉ tỉ người đã đươc Chúa cứu chuộc và biến đổi; Bây giờ họ là những vì sao sáng đang phản chiếu sự sáng của Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu.)
> I am one of those stars – Are you? (Tôi là một trong những vì sao đó, còn bạn thì sao?)
> We must shine the light of Jesus to everyone around us this Christmas. (C/ta phải cùng nhau chiếu sự sáng của Chúa đến cho thế gian trong mùa Giáng Sinh năm nay.)
> People need to hear the good Christmas news. We cannot just keep to ourselves. (Thế giới cần nghe đến tin vui của Giáng Sinh.)
> We must share the goodnews. (C/ta phải chia xẻ tin vui này.)

> Lại một mùa Nô-en trở về với chúng ta… và khắp mọi nơi người người đang sửa soạn đón đại lễ Giáng Sinh.
> Khắp nơi, những khúc nhạc Nô-en lại trổi lên thật tưng bừng và náo nhiệt; những ánh đèn lộng lẫy lại lấp lánh khắp nơi.
# Ai nấy hầu như đang hớn hở chờ đợi đến sáng ngày mai để được mở những món quà… mà mình đã trông đợi cả năm nay, sửa soạn nấu nướng cho những cuộc họp mặt gia đình và vui chơi… trong những ngày tới.
> Điều sẽ rất đáng tiếc, nếu chúng ta dự một đại lễ tưng bừng, nhưng nhiều người vẫn chưa hiểu ý nghĩa thật của nó là gì? Và rồi mùa lễ đó sẽ trôi qua và chúng ta sẽ cứ còn sống trong sự tuyệt vọng vì cuộc sống thiếu ý nghĩa.

> Giáng Sinh là khi Chúa Cứu Thế sanh ra đời để đem c/ta ra khỏi bóng tối của tội lỗi và cái nọc của sự chết. Chúa đến đem hy vọng của sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng một ngày. Chúa đến như ánh sáng rọi chiếu mỗi bước đi của c/ta trong sự bình an và chiến thắng khỏi quyền lực vô hình của sự tối tăm. (He is the One who can deliver us out of darkness, gives us hope of the eternal life, and even guide our every and present steps.)
# The Light of Christmas us is not about the electric lights that people use for decorations, and after Christmas they put them back on the box, and store in the edict.
> No. It’s the light of power, wonderful love of God, beautiful holiness, constant joy, endured hope, and perfect peace.
> Thank Jesus for rescuing you out of the darkness of sin judgment.
> Thank Him for giving you hope of the eternal life in heaven.
> And thank Him for guiding your life, each step as you are walking with Him everyday.

The Light of Christmas
John 8:12
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
What do you like best about Christmas? I must say that two greatest specials of Christmas are the joyest Christmas music and the magnificent Christmas lights. Don’t you know that Christmas has the most number of songs in all holiday seasons. We don’t get bore listening to Christmas music, because they keep spreading joy in our heart. Another special thing about Christmas is the decorated lights, that there is no holiday season can compare with. The darker the atmosphere, the brighter the Christmas lights which bring us the indescribable joy and excitement. But the true meaning of Christmas is about a greater Light of a different kind. This Light is about a Person, the glorious Son of God, named Jesus Christ, Who came down from heaven more than 2,000 years ago. This greatest “light” shining on the first Christmas was recorded in the three Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
The coming of this great light was first prophesized many years before Jesus came. The prophecy from Isaiah 9:2, about about 700 years before Jesus came, mentioned of a great light would shine on the people walking in darkness – “... the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Why were the people living in darkness? This darkness is not in a physical sense, but it talks about their spiritual hopeless, due to the darkness of sins. First, this darkness directly pointed to the downgraded moral condition of God’s people at that time for they denied Him, but worshipped all kinds of idols in the foreign land. Darkness can also be reflected as a slavery of greed, jealousy, hatred, bitterness, all kinds of addictions, liked being chained in a spiritual prison that has no bars. Today, some people are controlled by the darkness of drugs, gambling, and pornography that they find no escape route. Even worse than that, the Bible said these people are living in the shadow of death. Since the day after Adam & Eve sinned in the garden, people are under the curse of death. Death is our meanest enemy that no one can escape, and nothing we can do to get out of this curse. It started with Adam & Eve and are contagious to every human beings. All of us, one by one will have to face death, who respects no one, doesn’t matter how intelligent, healthy, powerful or rich you are.
But the prophecy also said the people living in darkness would see a light. This light was about a Savior, Who is from the land of glorious light of God, will come to bring them out of darkness. How do you push away darkness? Very simple, you just turn on the light. How do you push away death? You need Jesus Christ, the Living God – Who came into the world on the first Christmas, later died on the cross for our sins, then was raised after three days to crush the head of satan and his sting of death. That’s why when Jesus came, He proclaimed something that no other before Him or after Him ever declares, and that is “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." He brings us out of the darkness of sins.
Jesus as “the Light of the world” means that He came to give us HOPE. We are living in a time that we need a lot of hope: The world hopes for peace; America hopes that the new elected president who will bring a better economy for the country, and make “America great again.” Jesus came to give us hope with the promise of the eternal life in heaven with God. A place that the Bible in Revelation 21:4 describes “no more tears, no more death, or mourning or crying or pain…” “Death is not the end,” when we pass over this life to become a bug, a dog, a chicken, or a rat; but to those who believe in Jesus, death is the beginning of the eternal life. In heaven, God will reign in a perfect peace without any flaws, injustice, corruptions, lies, oppression, bullies, bribes, cheats, hackings… you named it. And the church will reign with Him, judging even the angels.
Not just the past, when the Light of Jesus took away all our sins, not just in the future, the Light of Jesus gives us hope waiting for heaven, but also for the present, the Light of Jesus is guiding each of our steps until we all reach our final destination. Before Jesus ascended up in heaven, He said one of the greatest promises in Matthew 28:20b – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Today, the Light of Jesus is always with us through the Holy Spirit, Who teaches, guides, reminds, seals, powers, blesses, protects us every moment of our life. Today, Jesus as the Holy Spirit comes to give us the overcoming power to all kinds and forms of despair, fears and doom. Countless number of people used to live a life with all kinds of fears due to superstitions, bad lucks, evil spirits; but now they are set free because Jesus’ Spirit walks with them, protects them, guides them, cares for them every steps. We get lost because we don’t follow close to Jesus; we fail because we don’t give the wheel of our life to Jesus to control; we fall into ditches and holes because we don’t have the Light of Christmas shining on our steps.
So Christmas reminds us the Great Light, Jesus Christ, Who came to bring us out the darkness of sins, Who gives us hope of the eternal life in heaven, and Who guides our steps to live a victorious life. Don’t forget that Christmas is not just about the decorated electric lights, but the lights of many billion people have been saved by Jesus; Now their transformed live are shining in this dark world liked many bright stars, leading people to the Savior Jesus. We must shine the light of Jesus to everyone around us this Christmas. People need to hear the good Christmas news. We cannot just keep to ourselves. We must share the goodnews.
