(Touch Jesus)
Luca 8:43-48
“Khi trở về, có đoàn dân đông rước Ngài; vì ai nấy cũng trông đợi Ngài. 41 Có người cai nhà hội tên là Giai-ru đến sấp mình xuống nơi chân Đức Chúa Jêsus, xin Ngài vào nhà mình. 42 Vì người có con gái một, mười hai tuổi, gần chết. Khi Đức Chúa Jêsus đang đi, dân chúng lấn ép Ngài tứ phía. 43 Bấy giờ, có một người đàn bà đau bịnh mất huyết mười hai năm rồi, cũng đã tốn hết tiền của về thầy thuốc, không ai chữa lành được, 44 đến đằng sau Ngài rờ trôn áo; tức thì huyết cầm lại. 45 Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn phán rằng: Ai sờ đến ta? Ai nấy đều chối; Phi-e-rơ và những người đồng bạn thưa rằng: Thưa thầy, đoàn dân vây lấy và ép thầy. 46 Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Có người đã rờ đến ta, vì ta nhận biết có quyền phép từ ta mà ra. 47 Người đàn bà thấy mình không thể giấu được nữa, thì run sợ, đến sấp mình xuống nơi chân Ngài, tỏ thật trước mặt dân chúng vì cớ nào mình đã rờ đến, và liền được lành làm sao. 48 Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Hỡi con gái ta, đức tin ngươi đã chữa lành ngươi; hãy đi cho bình an.” (Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”)
# Mathiơ 9:20-22 - “Nầy, có một người đàn bà mắc bịnh mất huyết đã mười hai năm, lại gần sau lưng mà rờ trôn áo Ngài. 21 Vì người đàn bà ấy tự nghĩ rằng: Nếu ta chỉ rờ áo Ngài, thì cũng sẽ được lành. 22 Đức Chúa Jêsus xây mặt lại, thấy người đàn bà, thì phán rằng: hỡi con, hãy vững lòng, đức tin con đã làm cho con được lành. Liền trong giờ đó, người đàn bà lành bịnh.” (Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” 22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.)
# Mark 5:25-34 – “Vả, tại đó có một người đàn bà bị bịnh mất huyết đã mười hai năm, 26 bấy lâu chịu khổ sở trong tay nhiều thầy thuốc, hao tốn hết tiền của, mà không thấy đỡ gì; bịnh lại càng nặng thêm. 27 Người đã nghe tin về Đức Chúa Jêsus, bèn lẩn vào đằng sau giữa đám đông, mà rờ áo Ngài. 28 Vì người nói rằng: Nếu ta chỉ rờ đến áo Ngài mà thôi, thì ta sẽ được lành. 29 Cùng một lúc ấy, huyết lậu liền cầm lại; người nghe trong mình đã được lành bịnh. 30 Tức thì Đức Chúa Jêsus tự biết có sức mạnh đã ra từ mình, bèn xây lại giữa đám đông mà hỏi rằng: Ai đã rờ áo ta? 31 Môn đồ thưa rằng: Thầy thấy đám đông lấn ép thầy, thầy còn hỏi rằng: Ai rờ đến ta? 32 Ngài nhìn chung quanh mình để xem người đã làm điều đó. 33 Người đàn bà biết sự đã xảy đến cho mình, bèn run sợ đến gieo mình dưới chân Ngài, tỏ hết tình thật. 34 Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Hỡi con gái ta, đức tin con đã cứu con; hãy đi cho bình an và được lành bịnh.” (And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”)
I. Life Suffering
> Have you experienced a shameful scar or confronted with a dead-end problem in your life? (Trong cuộc sống bạn có bao giờ đối diện với một sự xấu hổ, nỗi khó khăn, một căn bệnh nào đó đến nỗi phải bó tay chịu trận chưa? Và bạn đã làm gì?)
> During Jesus’ time, people had diseases such as leprosy faced a physical shame and there is no cure for them. (Ngày xưa những ai mắc phải bịnh cùi bịnh hủi thì là một điều xấu hổ phải đối diện với, vì vào thời điểm đó nhiều căn bệnh chưa có phương cách chữa trị.)
> Today, someone may feel shameful because they have a physical handicap condition. (Ngày nay một người có thể cảm thấy xấu hổ khi mình bị mang phải một cái tật nào đó.)
# Emotionally, others may feel disgraceful because they have committed a crime. (Về phương diện tinh thần, một người có thể cảm thấy xấu hổ vì họ đã có lần phạm một tội ác nào đó.)
> The natural tendency of these people is to withdrawn from the crowd, be isolated to avoid all “talk-down, gossip” as much as possible. (Điều tự nhiên đó là những người này thường sẽ tránh xa những đám đông người, âm thầm sống một mình để khỏi bị nghe những lời rủa sả, xua đuổi hay chê bai.)
> In the scriptures we read this morning, it mentioned about a woman who had been subjected to a bleeding disease. (Trong đoạn Kinh Thánh sáng nay, có chép về một người phụ nữ bị mắc phải căn bịnh mất huyết.)
> This disease during Jesus’ time was considred to be “unclean,” according to laws of Moses in Leviticus 15:25 – “When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period.” (Bịnh mất huyết được coi như là một điều “ô uế” - như có chép trong luật pháp của Môise, trong Lêviký 15:25 – “Khi một người nữ ngoài kỳ kinh nguyệt mình lại có lưu huyết nhiều ngày, hoặc là bị mất quá kỳ, sẽ bị ô uế trọn trong lúc lưu huyết như trong lúc kinh nguyệt mình vậy.”)
# Why do people wear gloves to care for bleeding patients? Because blood is considered as “unclean” and can carry transmitted diseases to others. (Tại sao những người chăm sóc cho những ai bị thương chảy máu đều mang bao tay? Vì máu được coi như là “ô uế” có thể truyền những vi trùng của một người qua họ.)
> How long did the woman have this bleeding disease? (Người phụ nữ này đã mắc bịnh này bao lâu rồi?)
# Twelve long years. (12 năm dài.)
> Did she find anyother way to cure her bleeding? (Bà đã có gắng đến mức nào để tìm cách chữa căn bịnh này?)
> In Mark 5:26 indicated that she had tried many doctors but none could cure her – “She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.” (Bà đã cố gắng hết sức nhưng “bó tay” như có chép trong sách Mác 5:26 – “bấy lâu chịu khổ sở trong tay nhiều thầy thuốc, hao tốn hết tiền của, mà không thấy đỡ gì; bịnh lại càng nặng thêm.” (Tiền thì hết, nhưng tật vẫn còn!)
> So who did the woman seek? (Người đàn bà này đã làm gì và tìm kiếm ai?)
> There is a lesson here – sometimes God allows us to face dead ends so that we must seek Him for help and to know Him. (Đôi khi Chúa cho phép c/ta đối diện với những “con đường cùng” (dead ends) trong đời sống, để rồi c/ta mới biết nhờ cậy Ngài, và đến thông biết rõ Chúa là ai.)
II. Her Expression of Faith in Jesus
> How did the woman express her faith in Jesus? (Người đàn bà này đã bày tỏ đức tin của mình như thế nào nơi Chúa Giê-xu?)
# In Matthew 9:21 it said – She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” (Trong Mathiơ 9:21 có chép – “Vì người đàn bà ấy tự nghĩ rằng: Nếu ta chỉ rờ áo Ngài, thì cũng sẽ được lành.”)
> Why didn’t she come and ask Jesus directly for healing? (Tại sao bà không đến thẳng với Chúa và xin được chữa lành?)
1) The crowd was the biggest hindrance for her to access to Jesus, people were everywhere pressured Jesus because they had needs just liked the woman? (Bởi vì đám đông người ở khắp nơi đang chen lấn Chúa, vì họ cũng có những nhu cầu nữa.)
# Some people in the crowd were there with needs, others with curiosity to see “magic shows,” and few to find reasons to disprove Jesus of what He had claimed, or prevent anyone to believe in Jesus; There is no different from today. (Một số người trong đám đông đến đó vì cũng có những nhu cầu bệnh tật mong Chúa chữa lành, kẻ khác thì vì tánh tò mò đến xem Chúa làm phép lạ, cũng có những người khác ở đó để tìm cớ bắt bớ Ngài, hay cản trở những người khác đến tin nhận Chúa; Những lý do này không khác gì ngày hôm nay.)
2) Bleeding disease is a shameful thing to ask Jesus in front of the public? (Đây là một căn bệnh gọi là “ô uế” cấm không được phép đến gần với những người lành, mà nếu bà bày tỏ ra công khai thì đám đông sẽ xua đuổi và có thể ném đá bà nữa sao?)
> She may doubt that Jesus would not touch her directly, because of her unclean disease? (Có thể bà cũng nghi ngờ sợ Chúa sẽ không muốn đụng đến bà để chữa bịnh vì là một căn bịnh ô uế. Bà chỉ muốn tự mình giải quyết vấn đề của mình một cách kín đáo, âm thầm, không ai biết, không làm Chúa bận tâm, rồi “rút lui có trật tự?”)
3) Jesus was busy on the way for a mission to raise a dead girl for a religious leader; He would not have time for another request? (Chúa đang bận lắm, trên đường đi chữa bệnh cho một đứa bé gái sắp chết của một người cai nhà hội, thì làm sao Ngài có thì giờ để đoái đến nhu cầu của bà đây?)
> But her “shy and quiet” faith could not prevent the woman to reach out and touch Jesus’ clothes and to believe that she would be healed. (Nhưng đức tin yên lặng của bà đã vượt khỏi mọi những trở ngại, cản trở này để dám nghĩ rằng mình chỉ cần rờ đến vạch áo Chúa thì sẽ được lành.)
> This is an amazing faith to believe in Jesus’ power to heal even without any direct contact or communication. (Đây là một đức tin lạ lùng nơi quyền năng của Chúa Giê-xu mặc dầu không có sự đối thoại trực tiếp công khai nào hết giữa người đàn bà với Chúa.)
> This is also an amazing power of Jesus to heal someone even without any public interaction or a need for a formal ceremony. (Điều này bày tỏ quyền năng lạ lùng của Chúa Giê-xu chữa lành căn bệnh một cách âm thầm, không cần những “thủ tục hay nghi lễ” rườm rà nào hết.)
> In many of Jesus’ other miracles, He sometimes gave a direct command; other times, he would touch the sick, or in some occasions, Jesus was not even present there; but this case was a quiet, indirect, by just a personal touch. (Trong những phép lạ khác Chúa làm, có khi Ngài phán một mạng lệnh, có khi Chúa đụng đến người đau ốm, hay không cần phải ở đó, nhưng trong trường hợp này là một sự chữa lành yên lặng, thầm kín, nhưng cho cá nhân một người.)
> The truth is this - there is nothing can hinder how God can heal us, the only condition is our faith in Him. (Không có một điều gì có thể cản trở những phương cách Chúa quyền năng chữa lành cho c/ta, chỉ có điều là c/ta có dám tin cậy Chúa mà rờ vạch áo của Ngài không mà thôi.)
III. Jesus Affirmed the Woman’s Faith
> Did Jesus know the woman touched Him with faith? (Chúa Giê-xu có biết ai đã rờ đến Ngài mà được lành không?)
# In verse 45, Jesus asked – “Who touched me?” and Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you,” and this is a ridiculous question? (Trong câu 45, Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn phán rằng: Ai sờ đến ta? và Phi-e-rơ và những người đồng bạn thưa rằng: Thưa thầy, đoàn dân vây lấy và ép thầy,” đây là câu hỏi quá vô lý và thật buồn cười?)
> But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; I know that power has gone out from Me.” What Jesus meant was “Who had touched Me with faith?” (Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Có người đã rờ đến ta, vì ta nhận biết có quyền phép từ ta mà ra, nghĩa là “Ai đã rờ đến Ta bởi đức tin?”)
# Some people come to church and touch God, but find no healings, others do – why? (Có biết bao nhiêu người đến nhà thờ muốn “rờ đến” Chúa, nhưng chẳng thấy sự chữa lành gì hết, còn kẻ khác thì kinh nghiệm được - tại sao?)
> The difference is whether the person just has the knowledge about Jesus or faith in Him. (Sự khác biệt là tùy ở một người đã “rờ đến” Chúa chỉ với sự hiểu biết về Ngài thôi, hay là đặt đức tin hòan toàn ở nơi Chúa.)
> It seemed that Jesus didn’t know who had touched Him by asking the question, but He saw the woman, and she finally knew that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Jesus’ clothes, and how she had been instantly healed. (Chúa hỏi giống như là Ngài không biết ai đã đụng đến Chúa, nhưng Ngài thấy rõ người đàn bà, đến nỗi người phụ nữ biết mình không thể giấu chi được nữa, thì run sợ, đến sấp mình xuống nơi chân Ngài, tỏ thật trước mặt dân chúng vì cớ nào mình đã rờ đến vạch áo Ngài, và liền được lành.)
> Why did Jesus do that? Would He want to shame her before the crowd? (Tại sao Chúa lại làm điều này, chẳng lẽ Ngài muốn làm xấu hổ người đàn bà này trước đám đông sao?)
> What did Jesus want to prove? (Chúa Giê-xu muốn làm chứng gì?)
1) Jesus is God in human form knows the deep, unspoken things inside each of us, that our human eyes cannot see, or even mouth cannot speak the words. (Chúa Giê-xu bày tỏ quyền năng của Đức Chúa Trời trong Mình là Đấng biết và thấy rõ những nỗi thầm kín, điều bí ẩn trong lòng của mỗi người c/ta, mà đám đông không thể thấy hay biết, kể cả không thể nói ra lời.)
2) Jesus wanted to affirm the woman that it was not the robe, but her faith in Him that healed her. (Chúa muốn cho bà và mọi người biết sự chữa lành này không đến từ vạch áo Ngài, nhưng bởi đức tin của người phụ nữ này trong Con Đức Chúa Trời.)
# Today there are so many people are trusting in superstitious statues or lucky charms, and not the true and living God. (Ngày nay có biết bao nhiêu người đang bị lầm lạc tin nhờ vào những vật vô tri vô giác, những tượng chạm, những lọ nước hòa với bùa chú, nhưng không nhận biết chính Đức Chúa Trời quyền năng là Đấng không bao giờ có thể bị giới hạn trong những đồ vật này.)
3) Jesus gave the woman the opportunity to testify her faith in Him before the crowd that healed her, because faith in God begins our salvation, but it should never be a static or a secret thing. (Chúa Giê-xu cho người đàn bà có cơ hội để bày tỏ đức tin của mình nơi Ngài cách công khai trước mặt đám đông, bởi vì đức tin bắt đầu sự cứu rỗi của c/ta, nhưng đức tin nơi Chúa đó không thể nào là một điều bí mật hay thụ động được.)
4) Jesus not just healed her, but He wanted to help the crowd to come to know Him as the Son of God and be saved too; so this miracle must be revealed to others also. (Chúa Giê-xu không chỉ muốn chữa lành người đàn bà này thôi, nhưng Ngài muốn giúp cho đám đông cũng thấy được phép lạ này mà đến nhận biết Chúa là Con Đức Chúa Trời, tin cậy Ngài mà được cứu rỗi.)
> If Jesus did not ask the woman, she would just go home secretly and thought that her healing was just a coincidence, and then no one else would know to glorify God? (Nếu Chúa không hỏi, người đàn bà này sẽ âm thầm về nhà, rồi có thể lần lần nghĩ rằng việc mình hết bịnh chỉ là một chuyện tình cờ, và rồi mất cơ hội cho những người khác trong đám đông thấy lời chứng của phép lạ, mà có cớ tin cậy Chúa Giê-xu và ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời.)
IV. Peace of God
> So who Jesus to you? (Như vậy đối với bạn, Chúa Giê-xu là ai?)
> How does Jesus compare to the gods that you are trusting? (Chúa Giê-xu so sánh với các thần mà bạn đang thờ lạy ra sao?)
> Do the gods that you know can give you peace? (Các thần mà bạn đang thờ lạy có ban cho bạn được sự bình an không?)
> Note that peace was what Jesus gave to the woman after she publicly confessed her faith in Him – “Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” (Nhớ rằng - sự bình an là điều Chúa Giê-xu còn hứa ban cho người đàn bà này nữa sau khi bà tuyên xưng đức tin của mình trước đám đông người – “Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Hỡi con gái ta, đức tin ngươi đã chữa lành ngươi; hãy đi cho bình an.”)
> What kind of peace is this? (Loại bình an này là gì?)
> It is more than a physical healing, it is about the healing relationship between a sinner and the perfectly holy God. (Sự bình an này không chỉ nói đến sự chữa lành phần thuộc thể mà thôi, nhưng còn là sự chữa lành mối liên hệ giữa một kẻ có tội và Đức Chúa Trời thánh khiết vẹn toàn.)
# May be the woman had committed a sin that caused her bleeding disease; But it didn’t matter, because she was a sinner just liked you and me, because we all have sinned. (Có thể người đàn bà này đã vi phạm một tội gì đó mà đã bị bệnh mất huyết này; nhưng chính bà cũng là một kẻ tội nhân như c/ta, vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội.)
> Sin separates us from the holy God. (Tội lỗi phân rẽ c/ta khỏi Đức Chúa Trời.)
# From the beginning, God created mankind with a purpose to live eternally with Him; but sin enters the world and alters our destination. (Từ lúc ban đầu, Đức Chúa Trời dựng nên loài người với mục đích để sống đời đời với Ngài, nhưng tội lỗi đã xen vào và thay đổi định mệnh của loài người.)
# My trip to Houston with bad, un-updated GPS – it altered my destinations many times & I got lost.
> There is nothing man can do to reconcile this broken relationship. (Không có điều gì mà con người có thể tự làm để hàn gắn lại mối liên hệ với Chúa đã bị đổ vỡ bởi tội lỗi.)
> Except through the death of God’s Son on the cross to fully redeem any repented sinner to have the power becoming God’s children again. (Ngoại trừ qua sự chết của Con Đức Chúa Trời ở trên cây thập tự, cho bất ai bằng lòng ăn năn tội và tin nhận Chúa Giê-xu thì có quyền phép để trở nên làm con cái Đức Chúa Trời.)
# In John 14:6 – Jesus claimed He is the absolute way to the eternal life in God’s kingdom – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Trong Giăng 14:6 – chính Chúa Giê-xu đã phán Ngài là con đường cứu rỗi duy nhất – “Ta là đường đi, lẽ thật, và sự sống; chẳng bởi ta thì không ai được đến cùng Cha.”)
> Jesus claimed He is the God’s Son, true and living God in the human form, and the only Way to the eternal life. (Chúa Giê-xu tuyên bố Ngài là Con Đức Chúa Trời, Đấng Chân Thần trong thân xác loài người, và chỉ là con đường duy nhất dẫn đến sự sống đời đời.)
> Anyone can claim anything, but can he demonstrate the power of his claims? (Ai cũng có thể tuyên bố bất cứ điều gì về mình, nhưng người đó đã làm gì để chứng tỏ lời mình tuyên bố không?)
# I can claim that I run fastest in the world, then go and compete with the Jamaica Usain Bolt – 8 times gold medalist? (Tôi có thể nói mình chạy nhanh nhất thế giới, nhưng nếu phải ra chạy đua với người lực sĩ ở nước Jamaica tên Usain Bolt đã 8 lần lấy huy chương vàng thì mới chứng tỏ lời tôi nói là thật, phải không?)
> So did Jesus demonstrate God’s power in Him to claim that He is the Son of God? (Chúa Giê-xu có đã làm gì để chứng tỏ quyền năng của Đấng Sáng Tạo ở trong Ngài?)
# Yes, through many of His miracles, and this was one of them. (Có chứ, qua những phép lạ Ngài đã làm.)
> How would you define the word “miracle?” (Bạn định nghĩa 2 chữ “phép lạ” là gì?)
> Something beyond the human power/ability to do, but only the great Creator God can do. (Là những việc ngoài tầm tay của loài người, nhưng chỉ có thể làm được bởi Đấng Chí Cao quyền năng.)
# Can president Trump make rains, stop the hurricane, flood in California, or heal cancers? (Tổng thống Trump có lẽ là người có quyền thế nhất trong nước Mỹ, nhưng có làm ra mưa, ngừng được bão, chống được quyền lực của ma quỉ, hay chữa được các căn bệnh ung thư không?)
> The Bible records at least 34 miracles of Jesus in the 4 Gospels. (Kinh Thánh, trong 4 sách Tin Lành về cuộc đời Chúa Giê-xu, có ghi chép lại Ngài đã làm tối thiểu 34 phép lạ.)
> These miracles can be put in 4 different categories: 1) Healings all kinds of diseases & sickness (the physical realm), 2) Over natures (the creation realm to prove that He is the Creator), Over the demon-possed (Over the evil spirit realm), and 4) the dead to rise (The eternal realm.) (Tất cả những phép lạ này có thể đặt vào 4 loại khác nhau: 1) Sự chữa lành của mọi bệnh tật trong phần thuộc thể, 2) quyền phép trên thiên nhiên để chứng tỏ chính Chúa là Đấng Tạo Hóa, 3) đuổi mọi quỷ ám để bày tỏ quyền tể trị của Chúa trên thế giới thần linh, và 4) Chúa làm kẻ chết sống lại để chứng tỏ Chúa có quyền ban cho sự sống đời đời.)
> But remember – Jesus did all of these miracles not for Himself, but to help us to see and to believe Who He is, so that we can be saved from the eternal death. (Nhưng nhớ rằng, Chúa Giê-xu làm tất cả những phép lạ này không cho Ngài, nhưng để giúp đỡ đức tin của c/ta thấy và tin cậy nơi Chúa mà được cứu rỗi khỏi sự chết đời đời.)
> Can your gods do miracles, or give you the eternal life? (Các thần của bạn có làm được phép lạ nào không? Có ban cho bạn được sự sống đời đời không?)
# Only Jesus! (Chỉ có một mình Chúa Giê-xu mà thôi.)
# In 1 John 5:19-20, the apostle John said further – “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. # That’s why Paul said in Ephesians 1:18-21 – “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Touch Jesus

“Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
Have you experienced a shameful scar or confronted with a dead-end problem in your life? Today, someone may feel shameful because they have a physical handicap condition. Emotionally, others may feel disgraceful because they have committed a crime. The natural tendency of these people is to withdrawn from the crowd, be isolated to avoid all “talk-down, gossip” as much as possible. In the scriptures we read this morning, it mentioned about a woman who had been subjected to a bleeding disease for 12 long years. This disease during Jesus’ time was considered to be “unclean.” Did she find any other way to cure her bleeding? She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. So who did the woman seek? Sometimes God allows us to face dead ends so that we must seek Him for help and to know Him.
How did the woman express her faith in Jesus? In Matthew 9:21 it said – She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Why didn’t she come and ask Jesus directly for healing? The crowd was the biggest hindrance for her to access to Jesus, people were everywhere pressured Jesus because they had needs just liked the woman? Bleeding disease is a shameful thing to ask Jesus in front of the public. She may doubt that Jesus would not touch her directly, because of her unclean disease? Jesus was busy on the way for a mission to raise a dead girl for a religious leader; Would He have time for another request? But her “shy and quiet” faith could not prevent the woman to reach out and touch Jesus’ clothes and to believe that she would be healed. This is an amazing faith to believe in Jesus’ power to heal even without any direct contact or communication. This is also an amazing power of Jesus to heal someone even without any public interaction or a need for a formal ceremony. In many of Jesus’ other miracles, He sometimes gave a direct command; other times, He would touch the sick, or in some occasions, Jesus was not even present there; but this case was a quiet, indirect, but personal touch. The truth is this - there is nothing can hinder how God can heal us, the only condition is our faith in Him.
Did Jesus know the woman touched Him with faith? In verse 45, Jesus asked – “Who touched me?” and Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you,” and this is a ridiculous question? But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; I know that power has gone out from Me.” What Jesus meant was “Who had touched Me with faith?” It seemed that Jesus didn’t know who had touched Him by asking the question, but He saw the woman, and she finally knew that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Jesus’ clothes, and how she had been instantly healed. Why did Jesus do that? Would He want to shame her before the crowd? 1) Jesus is God in human form knows the deep, unspoken things inside each of us, that our human eyes cannot see, or even mouth cannot speak the words. 2) Jesus wanted to affirm the woman that it was not the robe, but her faith in Him that healed her. 3) Jesus gave the woman the opportunity to testify her faith in Him before the crowd that healed her, because faith in God begins our salvation, but it should never be a static or a secret thing. And 4) Jesus not just healed her, but He wanted to help the crowd to come to know Him as the Son of God and be saved too; so this miracle must be revealed to others also. If Jesus did not ask the woman, she would just go home secretly and thought that her healing was just a coincidence, and then no one else would know to glorify God?
So who Jesus to you? How does Jesus compare to the gods that you are trusting? Do the gods that you know can give you peace? Note that peace was what Jesus gave to the woman after she publicly confessed her faith in Him – “Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” What kind of peace is this? It is more than a physical healing, it is about the healing relationship between a sinner and the perfectly holy God. May be the woman had committed a sin that caused her bleeding disease; But it didn’t matter, because she was a sinner just liked you and me, because we all have sinned. Sin separates us from the holy God. From the beginning, God created mankind with a purpose to live eternally with Him; but sin enters the world and alters our destination. There is nothing man can do to reconcile this broken relationship. Except through the death of God’s Son on the cross to fully redeem any repented sinner to have the power becoming God’s children again. In John 14:6 – Jesus claimed He is the absolute way to the eternal life in God’s kingdom – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus claimed He is the God’s Son, true and living God in the human form, and the only Way to the eternal life. Anyone can claim anything, but can he demonstrate the power of his claims? So did Jesus demonstrate God’s power in Him to claim that He is the Son of God? Yes, through many of His miracles, and this was one of them. The Bible records at least 34 miracles of Jesus in the 4 Gospels. These miracles can be put in 4 different categories: a) Healings all kinds of diseases & sickness (the physical realm), b) Over natures (the creation realm to prove that He is the Creator), c) Over the demon-possed (Over the evil spirit realm), and d) the dead to rise (The eternal realm). But remember – Jesus did all of these miracles not for Himself, but to help us to see and to believe Who He is, so that we can be saved from the eternal death. In 1 John 5:19-20, the apostle John said further – “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ.
